I believe this was the first movie soundtrack that Ry had full control of. It's an impressive work, with music clearly authentic, and evocative of its subject matter. Square dances, civil war folk songs etc are expertly executed by top rate musicians. (My only gripe is the irratingly out of tune penny whistle on the track Jessie James !)
A note of caution. For those expecting Cooder style Rhythm and Blues with smatterings of great slide guitar work - this album would not be for you. The track "Archies funeral" has some haunting slow acoustic bottleneck guitar on it reminiscent of his other soundtrack work ,but thats the only track. The rest is as mentioned above.
Try "Johnny Handsome" for lashings of bluesy atmospheric slide guitar work.
