Product Description

Geena Davis is a schoolteacher whose former life as a lethal C.I.A. assassin suddenly catches up to her with a vengeance. Samuel L. Jackson is the detective who helps her uncover the past before it buries them both. Together they make an unbeatable team that will blow you away.

From Amazon.co.uk

Geena Davis and her former husband, director Renny Harlin, attempted to pick up the pieces after the debacle of their box-office disaster, Cutthroat Island. What they came up with was this repulsive ode to American Film Noir, based on a script by Shane Black (Lethal Weapon) about an amnesiac schoolteacher (Davis) who searches for her true identity and finds she is actually a secret agent immersed in a deadly plot to topple the government. Mechanistic in its violence, obnoxious in its attitude, the film makes Davis, a once-promising actress, nothing more than a special effect. She tosses one to sadists in the audience by allowing her character to be beaten, punched unconscious, and tortured. --Tom Keogh

The official Amazon review here is so off-base it's untrue. Maybe get an actual woman's perspective on that one - or even ask a sadist. Such idle words. Black humour is just that, and I guess some folks will never get it (sexist sadism? everyone gets beaten up in this movie, duh). From another member of the public I'd let such lazy thinking go, but from the official site reviewer? nuh uh. So, in short, extremely funny movie and very good action too - don't be misled here.
Plus, just how often do you get to see the leads kiss, when one of them is white and one of them is black? And it is all tackled head on and in character. (Denzel W. and Julia Roberts should have, when parting after all they went through in Pelican Brief: that spoils the film forever for me. Samuel Jackson didn't get to kiss Bruce Willis either, though, I guess (">).

Late night, randomized thoughts, excuse please. One thing I've noted is the comments on here about screen ratios though (very useful). I'm off to look for the German or French release. The film-makers spent too much money and effort here not to be watching it how it should look.

I also disgagree with Tom Keogh - I think this is a great film, and very entertaining. It's one of those films I can watch several times. Like most action films, it is a bit far fetched in places, but there is more than enough action to keep the film moving.

The Long Kiss Goodnight Blu-ray Review

Distributor: Warner Home Video (Germany)

The Long Kiss Goodnight is one action film with a pretty decent story behind it.
Starring Geena Davies and Samuel L. Jackson, who have a great on screen chemistry together, the film has many layers to its average running time including action, suspense and even comedy with some classic one liners like only Samuel L. Jackson can deliver.

The film has seemed pretty underrated as of late, however thanks in part to a new high definition release, all that could be about to change.

Soon to be released on Blu-ray in UK/US regions, for some reason a German region free release has found its way onto the market first and it is that disc which is reviewed here. On loading the disc and selecting play from the main menu, the film begins playback using the English language track without any subtitles selected which makes for a hassle free import for English speaking collectors.

Warner Home Video have provided a new 1080p 16x9 2.4:1 transfer which is most impressive. Black levels are excellent throughout giving a real depth to the darker scenes, while colours appear bright and vibrant. Detail is also excellent with the image appearing sharp and clean. Previous DVD releases had generally been a little disappointing as far as transfer quality was concerned, however this Blu-ray marks a real step up in quality making the film appear almost brand new.

Audio is presented in DTS HD 5.1 English (as well as having German and Spanish options) with the track being loud and very well defined.

This is NO classic, and doesn't even pretend to be one. Fully formulaic, entirely consisting of scenes lifted from comics, and awash with one-sided characters, the film succeeds in thoroughly entertaining the viewer with its action, sexy & kick-ass dynamism of the protagonists (honestly, Davies did a vastly superior job compared to that done by the leads in "Charlie's Angels"), one-liners (some of the campiest and most groan-inducing ones), and feel-good yet suitably explosion-riddled ending. I enjoyed it, and plan to enjoy it through repeat viewing. RECOMMENDED.

We liked this film a lot. It has character, a good plot, plenty of action and suspense. I wouldn't hesitate to reccommend it to anyone. A film you can watch over and should enjoy (unless you're a self professed critic looking for the "arty" angle).....

Samantha Caine, schoolteacher, mother, suffering from amnesia, suddenly finds the impetus to track down her former life after an attempt is made on her life. It's going to be explosive......

Absolute preposterous nonsense laced with explosions, cringe worthy dialogue and Geena Davis as an all killing assassin bitch. Is it any good? Oh yes indeed! Directed by Mr Unsubtle-Renny Harlin {Davis' then husband} and written by one Shane Black {Lethal Weapon, Last Boy Scout & Kiss Kiss Bang Bang}, is it any wonder that the Long Kiss Goodnight is ear splittingly loud and funny as hell?

Davis plays Sammy "home-maker" Caine who teams up with a superbly seedy Samuel L. Jackson as ex-bent copper, ex-convict, Mitch Henessey. Their mission, which they choose to accept, involves rekindling Samantha's past life as an assassin called Charly Baltimore and unearthing shady government conspiracies. Shot against a bitter winter backdrop on the East Coast, with the Christmas setting oddly adding potency, our wonderful duo take us on one hell of a ride. Davis excels as a sexy action heroine while Jackson is content, and impactingly so, to let Davis basically kick buttocks as he plays perfect side-kick foil. Harlin, this after the critically savaged Cutthroat Island, knows how to construct action scenes, check out the train station scene and a tanker on the run heart pumper. But it's with Shane Black's screenplay that the film primarily entertains. Full of one line zingers and role reversal put downs, you should be laughing as your eyes and ears are assaulted in popcorn bonanza.

Mindless all action fun. 7.5/10
