Nils Lofgren and Neil Young go back a long, long way, and Nils has contributed to many of Neil's great moments over the years. So this is not the average tribute album, and it is full of very much not-average performances. Nils' voice is not dissimilar in pitch to the legend that is Neil, and this gives his vocals here a slightly eerie echo of their writer and his unique singing style. All of the songs are played straight by Nils alone, on guitar and piano. Even the guitar was a gift from Neil way back in 1970, and the piano is an emotion-drenched family heirloom belonging to Nils' wife.
So these performances are invested with years of life and love, and Lofgren delivers - ironically, bearing in mind his own song-writing talents - probably one of the very best recordings of his long career. Apparently it was recorded mostly at Nils' home. It's hard to pick highlights from such an illustrious list of songs, so I won't bother. But the quality of Neil's songs shines through, beautifully accented with care and skill by Lofgren's always wonderful guitar and piano playing.
A wonderful CD, low key but gorgeous, a heartfelt tribute from one legend to another.
I look forward to Nils sings Bruce! Now that could be wonderful as well.
