Product Description

Dive into the world of the lonely with 18 autobiographical stories of loneliness. These stories come from a broad cross-section of people of varying ages, experiences and countries of origin who visited the Web of Loneliness website. The stories include a childhood of bullying and abuse, the desire to love and be loved, a loveless marriage, life after divorce, a broken heart, being gay, coping with social anxiety, and a lifetime of insecurity. Accompanying each story is an insightful guide that seeks to answer two questions: 1. How did each of these individuals end up in the current situation that they are in and 2. What things might each individual do to change their current circumstances and overcome their feelings of loneliness? At the end of each chapter is a link to an online forum where you can discuss your own stories, opinions and ideas with other interested readers. The book gives voice to the lonely who often suffer in silence and isolation, and answers questions about how life experiences create feelings of loneliness. It is a window into the human experience we all share and the complex world of relationships and loneliness we all have to navigate.

About the Author

Sean Seepersad has been teaching, researching, and working with lonely individuals over the past decade. Currently he runs the Web of Loneliness website, dedicated to providing information and support for those who feel lonely. For his PhD, he developed, implemented, and evaluated a loneliness intervention program, which showed moderate success in reducing feelings of loneliness. The book, The Lonely Screams, is an extension of the Web of Loneliness website. In addition to the 18 autobiographical stories of loneliness, it contains insights into loneliness from the experiences the author has in working with those who feel lonely. The book represents a first step into developing a comprehensive program to help those who feel lonely. Part of the sales from this book will be used to fund outreach programs for lonely individuals.

This book is one of two resources, the other being the book "Lonely" by Emily White, which I have found particularly helpful in understanding my loneliness. I would recommend both though I guess for the budget-conscious this would be the one to choose since it's such a bargain price. I thought I was in an unusual situation since I felt lonely despite being in a relationship - in fact there are a couple of people featured in this book in exactly the same situation. I am impressed at how brave and open people have been about discussing such personal information. I was also impressed a lot by Sean's commentary on each case study which added value to the book and gave insights which the person themselves cannot see. I think it would be a good idea for any lonely person wishing a greater understanding of themselves and lacking someone else to give them feedback to read through these case studies and see which issues apply. Am happy to give this a 5/5 rating for being such great value for money - it's also the first time I ordered a Kindle book (using the Kindle for PC free Amazon software so I am not actually viewing on a Kindle) and the reading experience is fine so UK readers don't let it being a Kindle book put you off.
