Maggie Smith in her BAFTA winning performance as Judith Hearne, supported by Bob Hoskins as her flirtatious fellow lodger. This film has long been absent from the DVD market and gets a deserved release now. One of Handmade Films best productions, the only thing that lets this down is Anchor Bay's bad mastering of the print. Many scenes have characters with partly missing heads as the aspect ratio has been changed; changing TV screen preference (if your TV has that capability) doesn't seem to help the problem either. Shame on you Anchor Bay! This may not be a key release but it is an important British film from a pioneering company and features the First Lady of British actors-- a little more effort in putting the DVD together would have been welcome.

Absolutely atrocious from a viewing point of view. They've taken a 4:3 aspect ratio copy and blown it up to 1:78 to 1. The result is a grainy, faded image with a soundtrack that sounds like it was recorded on a 1971 cassette recorder.

Come on, Amazon, take responsibility for the product that you sell and get this off your website. I've wasted my money and apparently others have too.

I see that previous reviewers refer to the awful Anchor Bay edition - well, this latest mess from Optimum Releasing is even worse. I watched about 10 minutes and that was enough to know that it is virtually unwatchable due to the incorrect aspect ratio, cutting off the top of the image, i kid you not, right down to the eyeballs! Jack Clayton and George Harrison must be spinning in their graves, with their superb work mutilated to this extent. This is the very last Optimum release i will EVER purchase. Amazon - please note!
