Product Description

Ellie carries a secret so dark that she struggles to deal with life at university. Though she was desperate to leave home, she now lives in a room full of her boxes and bags, too scared to unpack, too paranoid to make friends. Just when she starts to relax she discovers someone out there is systematically destroying everything she holds dear. But who? And why?

Sarah is Ellie’s mother, newly divorced and worn down by Ellie’s hostility. She’s on the brink of a new relationship and trying to get used to living alone when she’s asked to have a lodger for a few months. But can Sarah trust the new people in her life? Is she safe in her own home?

From the author of My Time, Your Time comes this claustrophobic psychological suspense, focusing on our deepest fear that the people closest to us may want to harm us.

I read the first book by this author (My Time, Your Time) and enjoyed it so much I was pleased to find a second book also available.

Ellie is eighteen and leaving home for the first time, something she has been longing to do for several years now. She is taking with her most of her belongings and a secret she feels she must never tell. Her mother, Sarah, is in turns both heartbroken to see Ellie leave and relieved that she is no longer bearing the brunt of Ellie's hostility. With distance between them, Sarah hopes that Ellie will finally learn to appreciate their relationship while Ellie takes the first steps to relaxing and enjoying her new life. But someone seems keen to systematically destroy Ellie's new start, with shocking results.

I very much enjoyed this second book by a talented author, who I feel has a natural way with the words on the page. The relationship between Sarah and Ellie felt genuine and at no point did any of the dialogue or story feel forced, something I haven't been able to say about the last book I read (Six Years by Harlan Coben, whose style felt very 'in your face' and false to me). Because of this, with such a natural writing style, reading the story was effortless and so much more enjoyable.

I found this book started as a slow-building mystery, and I wasn't clear exactly where the story was heading at first, but it ended as a very fast-paced thriller that had me turning pages so quickly I had to slow myself down and go back to make sure I hadn't missed a word. I felt very involved with the story and the events that were unfolding in it.

5.0 out of 5 stars Psychological thriller that rings utterly true 13 Jun 2014
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
I loved this book - the relationship between mother (Sarah) and daughter (Ellie) was beautifully drawn, and the reader's sympathy was divided between the mother who needed her daughter to show she loved and needed her, and the daughter who needed to break free yet also still wanted her mother to look after her. This was set against the backdrop of the arrival of a creepily over-sociable lodger, who arrives once the daughter, Ellie, has gone to university and stakes her place within the mother's empty nest. The characters are very real- they could be people you know, and you feel the buzz of recognition. The sense of impending doom grows convincingly as the plot develops and Sarah struggles to maintain her relationships with her relatively new partner and her daughter.

You never really know who's telling the truth, but you instinctively root for Sarah and Ellie in different ways. I couldn't put it down- I was dying to find out what was going to happen - and I felt it rang totally true.

Wholeheartedly recommended for fans of novelists like (the husband-wife duo) Nicci French, Emily Barr, Louise Millar, etc.

4.0 out of 5 stars A good reason not to get a lodger! 6 July 2014
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
I was a bit afraid this was going to be another in a long line of the sub-standard crime thrillers which seem to be prolific at the moment. Fortunately, I was wrong.

Ellie and Sarah are in a fractured mother-daughter relationship and Ellie has just gone away to university. A lodger moves in and odd things start happening to both of them, leading to a pretty lively conclusion.

It's a gripping read and while there are a few jarring moments (especially in the final scenes which I don't want to detail because spoilers), it's entertaining, competent and thoughtful. There was a massive WHY? which I think could have done with being explained but I ultimately liked the way the book ended.

I've just read The Lonely Cool After Dawn (love the title - it's from Thunder Road, isn't it?) after reading My Time, Your Time. I loved this book. I have a teenage daughter and the author portrays the conflicting emotions and behaviour of teenage girls so well. The characters are well drawn and convincing and the plot is one that many women have to consider: how safe are we in our own homes? That's our biggest fear, that we can't trust those we're closest to.

The ending was great. I liked having to figure things out for myself and a re-read made me realise all the clues were there.

Another strong book by Mary Torjussen - I'm looking forward to her next novel.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent read 15 Jun 2014
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
It took me a couple of chapters to get into this book, but once I did I again found myself reading until the early hours like I did with the last book. This book is gripping and you can't wait to move on to find out what happens next - of course then you are disappointed it has come to an end. This is the second book by this author I have read and I am pleased to say that although both are good reads it is for different reasons. Often authors can be predictable and 'samey' and follow similar story lines - not in this case.

I would recommend this book, definitely a read in one go book!

5.0 out of 5 stars I really thoroughly enjoyed this book 12 July 2014

I really thoroughly enjoyed this book.
The relationship between Sarah and Ellie was portrayed vey well. I am the mother of two teenage daughters, one of them having just finished her first year at university. Although I do hope that we have a better relationship than Sarah and Ellie, I can relate to the rolling eyes and sighing. And the strong desire for privacy.
I read this in two sittings and it's one of those books that it's a disappointment when it's finished.
I look forward to a third book by the same author.
