Cyril Demarne had been a professional firefighter in the East End for 14 years prior to WWII and with war on the horizon he also had to train and prepare the recruits to the new Auxiliary Fire Service. Intense bombing of the city started in August 1940.
The book is densely written but very readable, with amusing anecdotes and many excellent photographs. The one that sums it up is on page 144 and shows St Paul's Cathedral standing amid devastation all around. It never fails to move me - how hard the firefighters battled against an inferno in order to save the cathedral, the greatest icon of the London skyline.
More than a memoir, this is a fascinating account of the heroism of the men and women of the London Fire Brigade and Auxiliary Fire Service during the Blitz.
