Product Description

BBC Review

To answer the question on the lips of the casual fans first, there is nothing on The Logic of Chance quite as cutting and hilarious as Thou Shalt Always Kill. Back in 2007 that celebration of independent pop-cultural thought became an anthem and was a highlight of Angles, the Essex duo’s underrated debut album.

On The Logic of Chance producer dan le sac and MC Scroobius Pip return with tunes which occasionally lack the immediacy of earlier tracks. But they retain the thought and vitality which characterised numbers like Development, the Angles effort which saw Pip rap the periodic table.

Sick Tonight sees Pip (aka David Meads) spit out his speediest rhymes while sac (aka Daniel Stephens) provides drum‘n’bass beats and paranoid bleeps for a frantic and malevolent start. Then, Five Minutes is a sad, unexpectedly polyrhythmic but quiet tale of domestic violence and a respectable partner to Magician’s Assistant, the harrowing Angles song about self-harm.

Great Britain is perhaps the biggest tune on this sophomore effort. Pip is at his proselytising best, but not dogmatic or boring. Lyrics about knife crime could come across as embarrassing in lesser hands, but Pip honed his skills on the spoken-word scene pre-sac and knows his way around a syllable or three.

Lead single Get Better is the most commercial moment and one which celebrates the positives of youth, or at least suggests things can be improved from kids confusing “love at first sight with lust at first light”.

It’s not all serious, beard-stroking stuff: the hirsute Pip does rhyme about his facial topiary in the amusing suburban transport lament of Last Train Home, and even references Amy Winehouse’s Rehab. Cauliflower is another bright moment with the whimsical tones of female US singer KiD A providing a pleasing counterpoint to the rhymes, while The Beat is refreshingly throwaway hooligan house. As Pip says, “This ain’t about your brain, it’s all about your feet.”

Although Pip and sac make music which is far from esoteric it’s still a little too abrasive for mainstream pop fans. It’s a shame because there’s little question the pair deserve a bigger audience and have proven again on The Logic of Chance that intelligence and fun in UK hip hop don’t have to be mutually exclusive. --Lou Thomas

First of all, my advice to you would be to just buy it - even if you've never heard of them. The advice and sheer genius anyone can gain from this album is completely off the scale. Get Better NEEDS to be played, everywhere. Scroobius Pip is such a comfort for me, because he sees the UK exactly as I do. We need to get people educated! I could sit here and ramble about what I want to do with England, but instead I will strongly advise you to buy it. The collaborations with Kid Carpet and kiD A are so beautiful. Perfect lyrics. Flawless beats. Unbeatable message. These guys really have it all; they have the passion that so many other generic bands lack. Such great people. Even my mum said he should be prime minister!

Music with meaning 17 Mar 2010
Format:Audio CD
Following up from the epic Angles, Dan le Sac vs Scroobius Pip have once again delivered an album of quality tunes supported by lyrics second to none. As UK hip-hop spirals further downwards into generic irrelevance and meaningless ego, Scroobius Pip's lyrics shine out as the one beacon of hope. If you want hip-hop that actually has something worthwhile to say and breaks the Daily Mail sterotypes of modern youth culture, then you should consider this album is an essential purchase.

After seeing these live, and being blown away by the music, the lyrics and the stage presence of them. I grabbed a copy of their debut `Angels' and was suitably stunned!!

Recently bought `The Logic Of Chance' and was again blown away by this complex, intelligent and musically incredible album.

Opener `Sick Tonight' takes me back to `Roni Size' fast hip/hop electronic beats and sharp lyrics, grabs you and shakes you to attention. `Four Minutes' is a slower but no less intense affair about a broken relationship and it's resulting end. `Cauliflower' is track that it took a while for me to get into, but once it took hold it really does not let go. Great mix of rapper Pip spitting lyrics leading to a chorus featuring a female singer pseudonym Kid A. Fantastically catchy track. `Great Britain' is one of my two favourite tracks on the album, fast beats, and witty intelligent lyrics using social commentary and anti current government policy opinions. Dan le sac Vs Scroobius Pip are to music, what Mark Thomas is to comedy. Not sure if that is too much of an opinion or not, but they have found a way to open peoples mind's to wanting to know more about subjects which people are often scared of learning more about. `Get Better' is the perfect lifter after this as to how we solve some of our social problems. I find this inspiring and uplifting through the music and the lyrics and this is my stand out track of not just this album but of any album released in the last 10 years.

Other stand out tracks for me include `Stake a Claim' more catchy beats, intelligent lyrics and a chorus as infectious as any you will ever hear, that you could imagine a 50,000 strong crowd jumping up and down and singing at the tops of their voices. `The Beat' makes me think of the electronic/guitar mix of `Hot Chip' especially the break down electronic part ¾ of the way through. `Last Train Home' is full on old skool hip hop at its best. `Snob' is a clever fast beat electro drum n bass track which is pretty ace. `Cowboi' is a slow beat track, pretty good. Tracklisting does not mention it featuring anyone else in the chorus, but it really sounds like the toy instrument wielding songwriter `Kid Carpet'. I can't confirm if it is or not, so could be wrong. Anyone know then let me know. :)

Totally recommend this album for anyone who likes the lyrics intelligent, the beats electronic/hip hop.
Other artists that this album makes me think of, but in no way would I say connected to (that would be for Dan le Sac Vs Scroobius Pip to say), going from my narrow view that is ':
Beastie Boys
Roni Size
Kid Carpet
Postal Service
