Book Description

12 April 2004
One of the key figures in history, Socrates has always been of interest to readers for the celebrated wisdom and strength of character displayed until his dramatic death at the hands of the Athenian state in 399 BCE. Unique among philosophers, the remarkable stories, incidents and dialogues of his life were captured by his most famous student, Plato, and also by the warrior historian Xenophon.

Mark Forstater's clear, insightful book draws from both Plato and Xenophon to create a new and fully rounded portrait of this revered philosopher. Unfolding the wisdom that inspired Plato's influential Dialogues, this title reveals Socrates' powerful morality and purpose allied with a sharp, playful sense of humour.

Mark Forstater (born 1943, dying daily) was brought up in Philadelphia, and moved to England in 1964 to attend Manchester University. After returning to Philly to get his BA at Temple University, Mark returned to Manchester and has lived in the UK ever since. A successful and award-winning film producer (Monty Python and The Holy Grail and 30 other productions), Mark has also turned his hand to TV, radio and audio production. His first book, The Spiritual Teachings Of Marcus Aurelius (2000), was so successful in hardback that his publishers asked for a series, and so The Spiritual Teachings of Seneca, The Spiritual Teachings of The Tao, The Spiritual Teachings of Yoga, and The Living Wisdom of Socrates all followed. Recently he has written a guided meditation for the financially stressed called The Age Of Anxiety, and his new book -I Survived A Secret Nazi Extermination Camp - is due to be published in July 2013. His first e-book - The Spiritual Teachings Of Yoga - has been published in June 2013. Other e-books will follow.

What a great guy Socrates the ugly must have been.
Being physically ugly gave him a profound insight into human nature
as his society like ours valued beauty above decency.
Know yourself......... was his moto.
We have to look at our own actions and not be judging others only.
Wisdom comes from keeping an eye on our own behaviour,
trying to improve as much as possible.
