"A special book . . . perfect for older girls, about an unusual friendship and a box to rival Pandora's." "The Observer "(London)

Book Description

‘Most important of all, THE BOX MUST NEVER BE OPENED. Do you understand?’ Jane is the only one to befriend the strange new girl in her class. All the other children think Staffa is weird, with her paper-white skin, strange way of speaking and funny old fashioned clothes. But Jane thinks Staffa is fun, and silly and brave. The only thing Jane doesn’t like about her is her mother, Lady Matilda, who dresses in huge tweed knickerbockers, drinks a vile smelling tea and seems to be sizing Jane up for something. Nonetheless, Jane agrees to go on holiday with Staffa. Travelling with them is the exquisitley painted box Lady Matilda always keeps by her side. Jane is given strict instructions NEVER to open the box but when she wakes one night to see a strange glow coming from it, she can’t resist a peek inside. What she sees changes her life for ever as she finds herself plunged into the tiny world of Eck . . . a world of slug steaks, spider racing and a tyrannical Queen hell-bent on marrying Jane off to her son . . . This is a vividly drawn contemporary fairy tale, full of mad invention, adventure and wonderfully colourful characters.

4.0 out of 5 stars Hail to the new princess 23 Feb 2013

If you like movie ARTHUR AND THE INVISIBLES you'll like this book. It has a slow beginning but then really gets going. Jane isn't the only new girl in school. Her soon to be best friend is from a world all her our. A world hidden in the woods out of sight inside of a magical box. While Jane think he's only come to play princess and have a vacation with her new best friend she soon learn the wicked queen has plans to make Jane marry the king and become the kingdom's new royal princess so that the queen can maintain control over her subjects. Even if it means joining the rebellion or riding a bee Jane plans to get home to her family. Who wants to watch spider back races or eat slug burgers?

5.0 out of 5 stars A gripping adventure story 2 Nov 2009
Format:Paperback
Graduates of Kate Saunders's delightful Belfry Witches series will love this when they're a couple of years older. It's a real old-fashioned girls' adventure, but updated. The magical world of miniatures is wonderfully imagined, the characters believable and the plot thoroughly satisfying and heartwarming. Perfect for girls to read to themselves at about 8 years or so, but also a great one for reading aloud.

4.0 out of 5 stars Fun adventure 14 Feb 2011
By Danielle Rice - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Hardcover
My 8-year-old daughter and I are reading this together - a chapter a night. It's a fun adventure story with a lot of humor. The story is very unique and keeps you guessing. A favorite line of my daughter's "Her neck is short. No it ain't. They all got short necks." It's a rather silly story with lots of good decisions and bravery on the part of the young heroine and lots of opportunity to laugh at the foolish adults...rather Roald Dahl-ish.

Jane enjoys playing princess until she learn she been capture by the queen to marry the king and become a princess for real and remain in the kingdom forever.
