Review

Worth buying for their stunning, detailed illustrations alone. Chuffing brilliant as ever, as the train might say. BBC Parenting 20041101 This is a lovely gentle story that has a familiar, traditional feel to it. The illustrations are very detailed and wonderfully busy... Each time I looked at the book, I found something new in every picture, and this will hold the attention of even young children. Eastern Daily Press 20041026 A triumphant tale chock full of delightful illustrations. The Good Book Guide 20041101 Readers can enjoy the meticulous illustrations of machines at work...there are also several different action rhymes to join in with. Nursery World 20041209 It is great to come across a book that will be enjoyed by the people it is intended for... There is so much charming detail to pore over. School Librarian 20040810

This is a wonderful series, with the most exquisite detailed illustrations that have an appeal way beyond small children. Certainly boys from the age of 2 should have at least one if they can't get the whole lot. The illustrations capture the children's attention and my boys can both spend literally hours peering at the tiniest details, spotting something new every reading which is remarkable considering the hundreds of times the book is read. I recommend all the series but I think this is the very best and the boys favorite because there is a wonderful double page picture of a quarry loaded with diggers and dumper-trucks, as well as a log-loader, ships and cranes, a background airport and the usual lorries, traffic jams etc. Watch out for the teeny-tiny sheep with the traffic cone on his head.

As other reviewers have said the illustrations are incredibly detailed. This is my favourite of the three we have. There is so much poignancy in the drawings, for instance in one picture where the Little Red Train is positioned for the scrapyard, Duffy is being consoled by Jack. If you look closely you'll see Duffy grasping a thistle with his hand, as he looks vacantly at the horizon. It's little touches like this that make Blathwayt's books a rare pleasure for both child and parent alike.

FYI - my on is 3 years old and studies the drawings for hours on end

This book and all the others in the series are absolutely marvelous in both story and illustration. As you read the story you can describe every detail in the accompanying picture which I found incredibly well done. The story is entertaining, adventurous and yet not too long. My boy and I both enjoyed it so much I ordered the whole series.
