5.0 out of 5 stars The Little Mermaid 7 May 2012
Format:DVD|Verified Purchase
This is the version that my granddaughter really wanted, so please don't make the same mistake as I did by purchasing the version which ends with the little mermaid dissolving in a cloud of bubbles.
It sort of ruined the mood established over the couple of previous hours.
Lots of tears that day and all granddad's fault.

Thoroughly recommended.

This DVD was delivered within the time frame specified for the delivery option I chose.

I had watched an animated version of the little mermaid that was very close to the original Hans Christian Andersen story. My daughter and I both loved this version as it was far more authentic and although not as glamorously produced as The Littel Mermaid featuring Ariel (was that by Disney?), it was a much more touching story.

Therefore, from the first review (of two) that were written for this DVD, I naturally believed this version to be the one I was looking for, if not a close facsimile. It said that there were no annoying songs, only an example of the mermaid's voice before her tongue was cut out. It also said that in the end she turned into sea foam and then became an angel of the sky. Even the second reviewer mentions Hans Christian Andersen, and that the reviewer was hunting for the same DVD that I was.

THIS DVD COULDN'T BE MORE DIFFERENT AND FURTHEST FROM ANTYHING THESE REVIEWERS HAVE SAID!
It is some cheap 80s/90s manga-esque production with a cheap-sounding song for the opening credits, and a playful tune all the way through the first episode (at least - I didn't bother watching the rest) that does not add ANY authenticity to the suspense and tragedy of the original story. But then that's because this ISN'T the original story - it is 5 episodes complete with happy endings of the adventures of a mermaid and her prince character. From the animated modern American-sounding characters (including a horn-playing talking beaver to a luddite-like hammerhead shark), this DVD is complete with poor scripting and cheap visual-to-voice synchronisation.

In summary, there isn't an ounce of authenticity (to the original HCA story) in this version.
