This book was a childhood favourite of mine, so I was delighted to find it back in print and have eagerly bought a copy for my own children, which I have enjoyed reading to them (and they have enjoyed hearing). The little ghost lives in an old oak chest in a cobwebbed attic in Eulenstein Castle. In fact, he has lived there for hundreds of years and enjoys visiting his old friend, Toowhoo the owl, so they can tell stories to each other. One of the little ghost's favourite tales is how he routed the Swedish General Torsten Torstenson, over three hundred years ago.

The little ghost wishes that he could see the town and the river by daylight, instead of moonlight, and this book is largely about how he manages to wake in the daytime and what happens to him when he does. Daytime, as he finds out, is no place for a little white ghost and he soon wishes he could be a night time ghost again. This is a charming book and ideal for newly confident readers, with fairly short chapters and lovely illustrations. If you, and your child, enjoy this, then you may well like Otfried Preussler's other books for children and I highly recommend both The Little Witch and The Robber Hotzenplotz. for a similar age group (6+).

I read this book as a child and it was...well still is a favorite. My first copy was a hand me down from my godmother and was falling apart and eventually got binned :'(
It popped into my head one day so I had to try and find it again. I looked for ages for and finally found a few on here. I will put it up till my son is old enough to have me read it to him and hopefully he will love it just as much as I do x

I read this book when I was a young girl myself. Loved it then and still love it now. Bought it for my sons to read because I thought they would enjoy reading it just like I did. They did too. Although the cover has changed since I last read it (over 35 years ago now) the story is still the same.

Great book - lovely story.

Highly recommend 5*

I bought a battered copy of this book when I was little, read it many times and loved it. As I couldn't find it, I just bought this for my daughter who is 9.

I was a bit surprised that this version is for German readers, with emboldened words in each chapter translated at the end of each chapter into German...! My daughter was so enthusiastic to start reading she decided she didn't mind this so has kept it.

It would be suitable for much younger children to be read to, and the illustrations are wonderful. Little Ghost is a kind and gentle hero.
