Book Description

1 Oct 2012
I am what one might call an enigma. Put me in front of a camera and I ll perform. Ask me to make a decision and I ll do it quickly. Invite me to speak in front of five hundred people and I ll agree in a second. But book me on an overseas holiday with my husband, or sit me down to talk about money, or take me out to a new and exciting part of town, and I ll be a nervous wreck. One might call me an enigma, but that would be wrong. What I really am is just highly anxious. I just don t talk about it to anyone. Except... er... now. The Little Book Of Anxiety is for anyone who has experienced anxiety which is pretty much everyone. It is a funny book about a serious subject: the ways in which anxiety can impact on your life and the lives of those around you. With humour, insight and searing honesty, Kerri Sackville opens up about the trials and sheer absurdities of living a worried life. From crazed nailbiting, to being hysterical in a jammed lift, to fearing her husband is dead when he s late home from work, Kerri has done it all. If you know the agonies of sleepless nights, regularly jump to the worst-case scenario, or drive your loved ones mad with your irrational fears, then this book may very well save your sanity.

5.0 out of 5 stars I can relate.... 25 April 2012

Kerri's latest book is more serious and less light-hearted than "When my husband does the dishes" but she still adds a deft humorous touch to a difficult subject. Anyone who has ever suffered anxiety (who hasn't?) or panic attacks will immediately relate to this book. Kerri doesn't hold back - from the slightly silly fretting about not having enough anxiety anecdotes for her book to the heart-rending dealing with the loss of a close family member, she examines every aspect of her battle with anxiety with raw uninhibited honesty.

Another of my favorite Australian authors, Lianne Moriarty writes this in her fiction book: "I never insured against [infertility] by worrying about it. Now every day I remember to worry that Ben will die in a car accident....I make sure I worry at regular intervals about Alice's children...I'm not going to stop worrying. I like worrying. I come from a long line of worriers. It's in my blood."

I'm definitely guilty of this sort of behavior but as Kerri reasonably points out "Worrying about something won't stop it from happening, anymore than wishing for something will make it come true." This really struck home with me and I suspect others will relate to this way of thinking. I'm also guilty of leaping straight to worst case scenario and on a number of occasions have found myself weepy and mentally planning my husband's funeral when he is a little late from work.....

This is not a 'how to' book or preachy; it is simply a deeply personal, funny, raw, and sometimes challenging account of one woman coming to terms with her anxious behavior and the effect it has on her and her family and friends. I enjoyed it every bit as much as her first book and I'd encourage you to download a sample (kindle readers) and see what you think or throw caution to the wind and just order it. I don't think you'll be disappointed.

While a 'light-hearted' read about anxiety, this book is actually very good - it humanises those little episodes of anxiety many of us feel at some time or another. Several times (although I don't consider myself an anxious type) I said out loud 'that's exactly how I felt' - particularly when the author wrote about her younger years. If you suffer slight anxiety, its well worth a read - it brings light-heartedness to the subject, yet never belittles it and in its own way normalises feelings that all of us feel at some point in our lives.
