I piled on weight after a foot injury, and having finally decided to take action, I bought this book on impulse.
I half expected to be bored during mealtimes and hungry afterwards, but in fact the opposite was the case. Well written and amusingly illustrated, this book makes for an entertaining and informative read even before you start the diet. The black dress diet mentioned in the title was the one I followed (although there are others, including detox plans and a 24-hour beat the bloat plan for those of us with fluid retention and *ahem* wind problems etc)
I got off to a great start but what with house renovations and house guests, I found it impossible to stick rigidly to the diet. Despite this I still managed to lose a few pounds and also gained some unexpected benefits. Firstly, my boating, fluid retention and digestion problems disappeared. Secondly, the headaches I had been plagued with vanished. Thirdly, I found I had a whole new list of recipes to add to my favourites. As a keen cook and daughter of two health-food nuts, I thought there was very little I had to learn about healthy and delicious food, but these recipes were a revelation. I never imagined - or more accurately, I had forgotten - that I could make a delicious meal from just vegetables without relying on meat or potatoes or bread to prop it up. The real proof of the success of this diet is not only my weight loss, but also the fact that after finishing the ten day diet, I still reach for the book when making out my weekly list of meals, and also that my boyfriend has started stealing forkfuls from my plate during dinner and has asked for several of the recipes to be cooked again, for both of us this time.
P.S. the weight is still coming off!
