More About the Author

TOVE JANSSON (1914-2001) is revered around the world as one of the foremost children's authors of the twentieth century for her illustrated Moomin chapter books.

Product Description

Review

Her prose is wondrous: it is clean, deliberate; an aesthetic so certain of itself, it's breathtaking (Daily Telegraph)

A unique and authentic voice that speaks to the reader across time and culture, heart to heart (Boyd Tonkin)

(The Listener) is a masterpiece of subtlety and simplicitiy. The rest of the stories in this collection are every bit as crisp, ironic, elegant and ruthless (Saga Magazine)

Book Description

Jansson's debut collection translated for the first time into English, to coincide with the centenary of her birth

This is the first Tove Jansson book I've read. It's a collection of short stories, told in a fairly simply style, that explores various themes, from aging and truth, to art and isolation.

I wasn't completely blown away but I've decided to buy one of the author's novels to sample her more in-depth work as there were several interesting tales in this collection that show the author is a deep thinker. I imagine her novels will be intelligent and thought-provoking, and I'm interested to see how her prose develops in a longer text.

I particularly enjoyed the tale about Aunt Gerda and the one about Stella's husband, the artist.

This book is translated but this generally isn't noticeable due to the sparse prose.

3.5 or 4 Stars (Some stories were much better than others)

Tove Jansson is just wonderful. I am so enjoying her books for adult readers. Her stories are full of tenderness for humanity but have edge and insight. The new translations seem excellent, certainly you don't feel as if you are reading a translation.
