Book Description

31 Dec 1995
On Christmas Day 1884, a desperate plea from a mysterious woman leads Arthur Conan Doyle - struggling physician, aspiring writer, and part-time demystifier of the occult - to a seance in London's East End and into a fiendish and deadly trap. Stunned by a shocking display of black magic, Doyle witnesses a murder, nearly falling victim himself before being rescued by a secretive stranger: Jack Sparks, a man who claims to be special agent to Queen Victoria. He tells Doyle that he has been targeted by a diabolical coven of Satanists - the Dark Brotherhood. As they track their attackers across the length and breadth of Britain, assailed by forces of darkness both human and supernatural, Conan Doyle and Sparks unmask a terrifying conspiracy that threatens not only the Crown but the very fabric of modern civilization. Their only clue: a list of seven names, the leaders of the Brotherhood. Skeptical by nature and profession, Doyle labors to prove that the events he has witnessed - horrifying visions, zombies, ghouls, molecular alteration - are elaborate ruses with logical explanations. But if so, why? Simply because Doyle's anti-occultist writings, never even published, have inadvertently exposed the Brotherhood's intentions? Who is the elusive, seemingly superhuman mastermind behind the Seven? Most important, as Doyle continues to put his life in the hands of Jack Sparks, the question persists: Can Sparks be trusted?

'The unabashed picaresque novel...entertainment for smart people...There are enough plot turns and twists to keep a Cthulu game going for months' --Washington Post

5.0 out of 5 stars Ticks all the right boxes 13 Jan 2013
Format:Kindle Edition|Amazon Verified Purchase
It's not often you stumble upon a book that totally sucks you in and ticks all of the right buttons straight away. The List of 7 did that for me.

Sherlock Holmes - TICK
Occult themes - TICK
Victorian setting - TICK
Jack the Ripper - TICK
Egyptology - TICK
Spiritualism - TICK
Zombies, vampires and other monsters - TICK

It felt that this book was written for me - I'm such a selfish reader.

The basic premise is that Arthur Conan Doyle's life is threatened following attendance at a seance; invited by a woman who wants his help. Jack Sparks rescues Doyle and warns him against the dark forces that are stalking him. What unfolds is a manic rush around the country escaping 'the grey hoods' and trying to solve the mystery of the 7.

If you know anything about the era, Conan Doyle, Sherlock or Jack the Ripper some of the 'revelations' in the book will not surprise you, but you will feel quite canny in solving some of the riddles.

The only thing that really irked me while reading this book was the American spellings of words. A book that is so steeped in English culture and history should be written using the English spellings. I know, this is really picky, but I'M really picky!

Other than that - if you enjoy a good romp, love Sherlock Holmes and enjoy your mysteries to have an esoteric edge read this. You won't regret it.

5.0 out of 5 stars Brilliant 18 Nov 2001
Format:Mass Market Paperback
This is not the usual type of book that I would read - a Victorian supernatural murder mystery. However, after ten pages, it is a book that you just cannot put down. Frost introduces the main characters and hints at their backgrounds to begin with before describing their pasts in detail. By the end of the book you are turning the pages ever faster to find out what happens to the good guys and if evil is vanquished. After reading this, you will want to track down Frost's sequel, 'The Six Messiahs' which is every bit as gripping.

I first bought a copy of The List of 7 back in 1994. Since then, the book, and its sequel, The Six Messiahs, have become an annual highlight in my reading calendar. The List of 7 is a highly atmospheric novel, which is superbly plotted, and which races along like a steam train to its climax. Frost has a real skill in painting the strongest of pictures in the reader's mind, and this book has a number of moments which still linger in my memory. Its characterisation, however, is its strongest point. The three main characters are brilliantly crafted by Frost, and this really marks the book as a true classic. Alexander is a truly original villian, and the best chapter in the book revolves around his brother's account of his life, and how it has shaped his own. I have introduced this book (and the sequel) to a number of friends, and cannot recommend it highly enough. Please Mr Frost, complete the trilogy!

4.0 out of 5 stars Intriguing
An unusual book with some interesting twists. I preferred the more descriptive down to earth parts rather than the more extreme elements but I enjoyed the neat and tidy ending.
