"Dark and compelling entertainment . . . an irresistible page turner."--Clive Barker

Product Description

On Christmas Day 1884, a desperate plea from a mysterious woman leads Arthur Conan Doyle - struggling physician, aspiring writer, and part-time demystifier of the occult - to a seance in London's East End and into a fiendish and deadly trap. Stunned by a shocking display of black magic, Doyle witnesses a murder, nearly falling victim himself before being rescued by a secretive stranger: Jack Sparks, a man who claims to be special agent to Queen Victoria. He tells Doyle that he has been targeted by a diabolical coven of Satanists - the Dark Brotherhood. As they track their attackers across the length and breadth of Britain, assailed by forces of darkness both human and supernatural, Conan Doyle and Sparks unmask a terrifying conspiracy that threatens not only the Crown but the very fabric of modern civilization. Their only clue: a list of seven names, the leaders of the Brotherhood. Skeptical by nature and profession, Doyle labors to prove that the events he has witnessed - horrifying visions, zombies, ghouls, molecular alteration - are elaborate ruses with logical explanations. But if so, why? Simply because Doyle's anti-occultist writings, never even published, have inadvertently exposed the Brotherhood's intentions? Who is the elusive, seemingly superhuman mastermind behind the Seven? Most important, as Doyle continues to put his life in the hands of Jack Sparks, the question persists: Can Sparks be trusted?

Format:Mass Market Paperback
I first bought a copy of The List of 7 back in 1994. Since then, the book, and its sequel, The Six Messiahs, have become an annual highlight in my reading calendar. The List of 7 is a highly atmospheric novel, which is superbly plotted, and which races along like a steam train to its climax. Frost has a real skill in painting the strongest of pictures in the reader's mind, and this book has a number of moments which still linger in my memory. Its characterisation, however, is its strongest point. The three main characters are brilliantly crafted by Frost, and this really marks the book as a true classic. Alexander is a truly original villian, and the best chapter in the book revolves around his brother's account of his life, and how it has shaped his own. I have introduced this book (and the sequel) to a number of friends, and cannot recommend it highly enough. Please Mr Frost, complete the trilogy!

Brilliant 18 Nov 2001
Format:Mass Market Paperback
This is not the usual type of book that I would read - a Victorian supernatural murder mystery. However, after ten pages, it is a book that you just cannot put down. Frost introduces the main characters and hints at their backgrounds to begin with before describing their pasts in detail. By the end of the book you are turning the pages ever faster to find out what happens to the good guys and if evil is vanquished. After reading this, you will want to track down Frost's sequel, 'The Six Messiahs' which is every bit as gripping.

A True Mystery 16 Jun 2003
Format:Paperback
Conan Doyle and a secret agent! Mystery, intrigue and excitment. This truely is one of the best books I have ever read. It has everything you could ask for, including a little romance. Conan Doyle, although a little bewildered at first, is soon quick to involve himself in the twists and turns of the plot, as problem follows problem. To put this book down is impossible, and to love the secret agent is a matter of course, whether you are male or female.
Altough this review is short, it can't justify the book.... You'll just have to read it yourself!
