Covers the full sweep of Scottish history from the time of the Picts and Romans, to Robert the Bruce, the Reformation, Montrose, the Jacobites and the Highland Clearances. Told in the gripping and lucid style we have come to expect from John Prebble - the man who helped the Scots to rediscover their own past!

The Lion in the North 17 Oct 2002

Format:Paperback
The book covers Scottish history from early times to the 19th century. It is a clear and lucid account written in a style which gives plenty of detail without becoming a mere list of dates and events. For anyone interested in how and why Scotland came to be, this is a very useful book.

A good read 8 Mar 2011
By KevinF
Format:Paperback
The Lion in the North I think it combines being a book of historical facts and a story-like narration very well. I could follow it quite easily, and didn't have to keep flicking to the back to remind myself who everybody was. I bought it to check out who won which battles, where Mary Queen of Scots fitted in with the Tudors, and the Scottish part of the civil war. Everything I wanted was in there.
