Amazon.co.uk Review

People are often scared of straight-to-DVD movies, and rightly so--the recent American Pie follow-ups, and regular Steven Seagal hatchet-jobs keep up the tradition of cheap taste titles not good enough for the big screen. But every now and again, a good film slips by without a theatrical release, and ends up on DVD without anyone knowing much about it. Here we have case in hand--The Line--a crime-drama starring heavyweights Ray Liotta and Andy Garcia, with a story focusing on characters rather than action. 'The Line' is both a physical channel between the US and Mexico (through which illegal things are trafficked), and a metaphorical demonstration of the choices humanity has to take in everyday life (whether the film’s heroes cross ‘the line’ in certain situations). Set mostly in bustling Tijuana – it’s well shot with a subtle but intelligent score. The story follows an aging bounty hunter tracking down the ruthless leader of a Mexican drug cartel, but with the hitman struggling with his past, and double-crossers within the cartel, tensions are running high.

While the script is a little slow, and the action perhaps too infrequent, the writers are clearly focusing on the lead characters and the struggles they’re facing. It’s an intelligent look into how these guys survive and what they have to live with. There’s no doubting the talents of Liotta and Garcia-–they’re probably working with less substance than they’re used to, but still turn in strong performances, and this DVD is all the better for it. Plus there’s a bonus, almost mandatory appearance from the wonderfully grisly Danny Trejo (it is a Mexican drug cartel after all). If it’s brainless action you want, type ‘Steven Seagal’ into the search box, but those who want a more contemplated take on crime could do a lot worse than this--Tom

Worth sticking with 29 Jan 2010
By PJ Rankine TOP 500 REVIEWER VINE™ VOICE
Format:DVD
This is a complex slow burning thriller with exciting outbursts of violence. Set in Tijuana and beautifully filmed the story is about a drugs cartel where the ailing head played by Andy Garcia has handed over power to his young deputy. His illegitimate son however feels that he should have had control of the cartel and moves against him. In the meantime the new boss is dealing with the Taliban and has attracted the attention of the CIA/DEA who also want him taken out. In comes Ray Liotta as a burnt out hitman to do the hit but for whom? The story twists and turns with a surpising ending. Our own Jason Connery also gets a role as the son's right hand man and Valerie Cruz gives a convincing performance as the tart with a heart who gives hitman Ray new hope. Presented in letterbox format with an excellent audio track making full use of the available soundfield.

The Line 7 May 2010
Format:DVD
The film offers some insight into the complexity of gang hierrachy and linkage between "goodies" and "baddies" inovled in drug smuggling into the US. There is an interesting twist to the plot. The photography is superb and well acted. I would recommend this film to anyone interested in action films.

Anyone wanting just to see a fast action, non-stop butt-kicking film, as the DVD Production Description states should go for a cheap Steven Seagal film where good acting is the last reqisite but if it's something with a LITTLE more depth thenyou could do worse than give this a try?
I'm NOT a fan of Andy Garcia at all so the less I see of him on screen the better however Ray Liotta always trys to do good with whatever crap he is handed to act with as in this situation and he turns in a blinding performance. He is the ageing hitman/bounty hunter hired by we don't know who - even the CIA don't know he's there, and he gets beaten up and robbed by a gang of street kids after earlier showing how he can take care of himself, so he IS vulnerable, which makes you like him!
The main brutality in this film is dished out by one bad guy to the other and there is plenty of it to which of course the corrupt local police turn a blind eye. This film is one of Liottas' best ACTING performances if the viewer really watches him bury himself into the character. Also features Armand Assante, Danny Trejo.
