Product Description

Product Description

The Lindisfarne Gospels is an eighth-century masterpiece of Celtic illumination. After careful study, Aidan Meehan has beautifully redrawn more than fifty designs that appear on its pages. Each one has been taken from its amazingly intricate background, often extricated from other entangled ornaments, and enlarged. The original manuscript page from which each design is derived is provided so you can refer to reproductions of the gospel book and see the decorative style and colors used by the scribes in the eighth century. Based on the four types of pattern in the Lindisfarne Gospels -- knotwork, spirals, mazes, and animal patterns, with special emphasis on the jewel-like birds and dogs -- the drawings range from simple to complex and will inspire you to try out your own painting techniques and color schemes.

The paper is heavy grade, the designs interesting, although the designs are printed both sides.
When I looked at the designs my first reaction was they would be of great interest to anyone looking for a new design for a tattoo or a tattoo artist. And certainly of interest for anybody wishing to duplicate the intricate calligraphy art of medieval times.

Misinformation 21 Aug 2010
By Aelfred
Format:Paperback
I found this book to be very well produced and very helpful. However, It is decribed repeatedly as 'Celtic'. Lindisfarne, im sure most people will be aware, is part of England and most certainly was part of England when the Lindisfarne Gospels were created (698-715), in the period that is known as 'Anglo-Saxon' England.

I understand that Insular art is widley and wrongly referred to as 'celtic' art, and for that reason this book will be found under the 'celtic' heading, but misinformation is misinformation. This is English art and should be celibrated as such.
