My problem with this film is not with its pace (which is, as should be clear from many other reviews here, extremely slow), nor with its lack of both story-line and conventional development of characters. I fully appreciate that film is first and foremost a sensual medium, and does not need to be narrative. In fact, all of my favourite films are heavily on the "audio-visual experience" side ("2001" and "Barry Lyndon," some of Peter Greenaway's films, "Slipstream" by Hopkins).
My problem with this film is with its lack of humour. I have come to know Jarmusch as an extremely witty director, and films like "Coffee & Cigarettes," "Mystery Train," or "Down By Law" are rife with all types of humour from innocent to dark. This is not the case here. What these characters do, how they behave with each other, the environments they move in, all of this is cold and lacks charm to the point of feeling clinical. Which is to say, if you like Jarmusch for the smoothness and calm of "Permanent Vacation," you might just like this one (there is, as it were, nothing wrong with it, technically speaking, it is clearly a well-made film). But don't expect any warmth, whatsoever.
