My problem with this film is not with its pace (which is, as should be clear from many other reviews here, extremely slow), nor with its lack of both story-line and conventional development of characters. I fully appreciate that film is first and foremost a sensual medium, and does not need to be narrative. In fact, all of my favourite films are heavily on the "audio-visual experience" side ("2001" and "Barry Lyndon," some of Peter Greenaway's films, "Slipstream" by Hopkins).

My problem with this film is with its lack of humour. I have come to know Jarmusch as an extremely witty director, and films like "Coffee & Cigarettes," "Mystery Train," or "Down By Law" are rife with all types of humour from innocent to dark. This is not the case here. What these characters do, how they behave with each other, the environments they move in, all of this is cold and lacks charm to the point of feeling clinical. Which is to say, if you like Jarmusch for the smoothness and calm of "Permanent Vacation," you might just like this one (there is, as it were, nothing wrong with it, technically speaking, it is clearly a well-made film). But don't expect any warmth, whatsoever.

Seriously Underrated 20 Feb 2012
Format:DVD
I'm a huge fan of Jim Jarmusch and I think this is an exceptional film. It is a tranquil and atmospheric work of art where the story is revealed by understanding the personalities and intentions of the characters. The film is more about a mans interaction with these characters and his journey towards the completion of his mission. As is shown by the reviews here, it is not to everyones taste but if you're a fan of Jim Jarmusch fims and enjoyed the ambient flow of his earlier work, specifically Dead Man, then it is definitely worth a try even if it's just for the masterful cinematography that this fim utilizes.

Im just glad that I wasnt told anything hinting towards what this film was about before watching-that would've spoilt the film completely for me (amazon doesnt help with its 'man on a dangerous mission' description). Many in the press no doubt were, which arguably to some extent wouldnt have helped their conflicting or mediocre reviews (its either a great 'arty' film with its own individual style, or a slow pointless journey, especially if you have little patience). Both of these comments are arguably true, but personally I didnt find this film slow, despite its 2 hour duration. You should eventually be able to understand its pace and overall mood. What some may argue about however is with the films finale - the movie retains the same style, as it should, but its storyline relating to individual characters does not become much more descriptive, so many may still walk out after watching this thinking "what was that about?", or "who was xxxx". Arguably the movie may have benefited by either doing so, or by speeding up/increasing a great deal in suspense before its final end, but even without this, it still stands out as something different. Many will no doubt argue on the opposite side saying all these unanswered questions leave you with a movie with far more depth. Worth a watch, but because its one of those minimalistic art films that not everyone will enjoy, perhaps not a purchase for the majority, especially not if you are expecting all out action after reading the description, but it still stands out as a result-especially when comparing to alot of the drivel that comes out of the cinema today ;)

A masterpiece.
Jarmusch refines his cinematic form. Only the essential, the deep traces of his code and credo, encapsulating in this "ouvre" his depurated filmic writing. Read more
