DVD Description

One of the very best and most popular British TV sitcoms, The Likely Lads starred James Bolam (Terry) and Rodney Bewes (Bob) as two working-class lads living in the north-east of England in the 1960s. Written by Dick Clement and Ian La Frenais (Porridge), the witty dialogue and sharp observations of working class Britain was an instant hit.

The stories focused on the friendship of Terry and Bob as they reacted to true-to-life dilemmas such as cash shortages, the pursuit of the opposite sex (a constant theme), their work in an electrical components factory, and their support of a struggling football team.

This DVD contains all of the surviving episodes from the original 3 series: Entente Cordiale (16/12/64); Double Date (23/12/64); Older Women Are More Experienced (30/12/64); The Suitor (20/01/65); Last Of The Big Spenders (07/07/65); Rocker (18/06/66); Goodbye To All That (23/07/66).

Curiously, despite the assertion on the box, this DVD doesn't contain ALL the surviving episodes. There is another one, "The Other Side of the Fence", which was screened by UK Gold last year, featuring Anneke Wills. In this episode, Bob is promoted from the workshop into the management side of the company (hence the title). If UK Gold had the episode (and presumably acquired it from the BBC), then how is it that the BBC themselves seem to be unaware of it? Releasing a DVD containing supposedly ALL the surviving episodes, while omitting ONE, strikes me as somewhat daft.

When this DVD was first listed at retailers sites across the internet I was puzzled, because they listed it as the complete series of 1-3, stating it had every episode from all 3 series, when it was well known that only a few had survived, now this has been amended and we see the actual episodes that are included on this DVD, but I can state for a fact it is still missing one surviving episode because I have it on a DVD someone recorded off the TV a while back, the episode is called 'The other side of the fence'.

As for the episodes themselves, they show their age, but hopefully the DVD release should have improved the quality, particuarly the sound which on some episodes from the tv transmissions could sometimes be poor. But a great collection of comedy classics nevertheless, incidentally the first series of 'Whatever happened to the likely lads' is due for a May 2006 release.

A Likely cock-up 24 Feb 2006
First we were told that this would include all the episodes from all 3 series (even though it was well known that only 8 episodes survive), then the DVD cover art is shown stating "featuring all the surviving episodes of the classic 60's comedy including the first ever episode and the final instalment."

Wrong - under the trades description act, the publishers of this DVD could be in trouble.

The DVD only contains 7 of the 8 surviving episodes, having missed out "The other side of the fence".

If you are a fan, you'll probably buy it anyway, so just be warned.
3 out of 5 stars, when with a bit more care, it could have been a 5 star release.

A likely purchase
What can I say. Ground breaking comedy at it's best. Only complaint, these are the only remaning episodes that have survived. Some irreplaceable episodes lost forever.
