Book Description

30 Jan 2009

There was once no greater advocate for revolution than Michel Wéry. No voice spoke louder, was more impassioned, on the need for a new order, for an end to disparity and injustice - not just in France but throughout the continent. Strange, then, that such a man should find himself in the employ of the Prince Bishop of Erzberg, as scout and spymaster for a regime at absolute odds with his ideals.

But time has taught Wéry harsh lessons: the Terror, the endless wrangling, the petty motivations of France's new ruling class, and the atrocities carried out in freedom's name - all have left their mark. Revolution has spawned a monster, and Wéry has vowed to thwart its march.

And with Paris' scheming now focused on the Prince Bishoprics, her armies poised to strike, it seems fate has thrown Wéry his chance. But just what is he prepared to sacrifice? Himself? surely. A city state? Perhaps. The life of the sister of his one true friend? The beautiful Maria Adelsheim who dances the Lightstep in mourning for a brother, and for a man whom might yet be saved...

Set against a backdrop of political thrust and counter-thrust, of lavish balls and shadowy cults, and to the rhythm of incessant canon-fire, The Lightstep is an epic story of love and honour, and a stunningly realised account of one of the defining moments in modern European history.

A great work of theatre and a true historical epic...John Dickinson writes with a light touch and an eye for detail. He has the ability to paint every scene and draw every character with just a few deft strokes...This is a gem of a novel (Historical Novels Review )

5.0 out of 5 stars Un-putdownable 6 Sep 2008
Format:Hardcover
In the Lightstep, John Dickinson has vividly recreated the shifting alliances and uncertainties of the French revolutionary wars, seen through the eyes of his hero/anti-hero, a Belgian revolutionary idealist now a spy fighting against the corruption of his one-time ideals. Meticulously researched (how many other authors would have bothered to find out that the colloquial description of a court musician in 18th century Germany was "a Bach"?), and carefully paced, John Dickinson's atmospheric but pacy prose makes real his fictional town of Erzburg and its citizens as they struggle to come to terms with the increasing anachronism of the old order and the terrifying uncertainties of the new. This book is aimed at a different audience from Dickinson's Cup of the World series, but shares the same powerful and unsettling atmosphere. I couldn't put it down.

By J. Currie VINE™ VOICE
Format:Hardcover
In 1797 Michel Wery, former revolutionary, attempts to stop the horror the French Revolution has become, as its armies invade the German Prince-Bishoprics of the Rhineland. As the little state of Erzberg is attacked by the French how far will Wery go to stop them? This is a really great story, the sort of historical novel I thought could not be written anymore. Erzberg is so convincingly described it is hard to believe the city state is Dickinson's own creation. The cast of the drama are such well rounded and imaginatively drawn personalities that they arouse an enormous emotional response in the reader as we appreciate their difficulties, motivations and dilemmas. This is a novel of ideas, the cost of idealism, the necessity of compromise; it is a novel of action, the intrigues of individuals, the passing of tradition, the force of the new. It is a novel of politics, what can be done contrasted with what ought be done, the relationships between the powerful and the weak. It is a novel of love, of the exile for those who receive him, of Wery for the sister of his dead friend, an aristocrat whom he would normally have despised. Above all it is a novel of great humanity, allowing decency and optimism to flower even in the most hopeless of situations. I thoroughly recommend it to any reader who enjoys a thoughtful and moving historical novel.
