An expanded edition with a new chapter on prayer and discussion questions
The heart of Christianity is transformationa relationship with God that impacts not just our "spiritual lives," but every aspect of living. John Ortberg calls readers back to the dynamic heartbeat of ChristianityGods power to bring change and growthand reveals both the how and why of transformation.
With a new chapter on prayer and added discussion questions, this expanded edition of The Life Youve Always Wanted offers modern perspectives on the ancient path of the spiritual disciplines. But this is more than just a book about things to do to be a good Christian. Its a road map toward true transformation that starts not with the individual but with the object of the journeyJesus Christ.
As with a marathon runner, the secret to winning the race lies not in trying harder, but in training consistentlytraining with the spiritual disciplines. The disciplines are neither taskmasters nor an end in themselves. Rather they are exercises that build strength and endurance for the road of growth. The fruit of the Spiritjoy, peace, kindness, etc.are the signposts along the way.
Paved with humor and sparkling anecdotes, The Life Youve Always Wanted is an encouraging and challenging approach to a Christian life thats worth livinga life on the edge that fills an ordinary world with new meaning, hope, change, and joy. --This text refers to the Hardcover edition.

He discusses the difference between trying hard and being trained and then sets forth a whole series of chapters on various spiritual disciplines. He covers subjects such as celebration, prayer, confession, servanthood and suffering and writes an extremely insightful chapter on the practice of "slowing" in the context of what he calls "hurry sickness." His ability lies in not only recognising the pace and irritation level at which we so often live, but in prescribing some very practical disciplines to "ruthlessly eliminate hurry" from your life. His ideas are both timely and useful in our often fast moving lifestyles.
I found this book to be honest, witty and deep. It is so full of simple practical advice that it makes you feel as if you could actually give this a try too. If you feel living a life like Jesus is out of your reach, this book may well encourage you and give you some hope, together with some of the tools to help you do it. I commend it to you.
