About an hour after stomping on a spider I was browsing this site and came across this. Written by Jean-Henri Fabre this book really brings to life the everday happenings of spiders. More from a whim than anything else I decided to download this free text, and I am glad that I did. Fabre writes in an easy to understand and follow style, he also brings his subject matter to life and creates something rivetting. If like me, you will start off not really knowing that much about spiders, only the very basics but by the end of this book you will become quite knowledeable and want to find out more.

Fabre explains the experiments he carries out and he doesn't immediately jump to conclusions. Admired by scientists from Darwin to others right up to the present day he shows how he observes and carries out experiments to see what will happen. He was never a man to jump to conclusions, indeed he stayed scetical upon the theory of evolution. What he showed us all is how to observe and take notes and to have a healthy does of scepticism.

If you are an arachnophobic this book may possibly help you as well. There are no pictures for you to scream at, what you have is detailed observations on the life of spiders, their everyday chores, mating rituals, and rearing their young. This was a real pleasure to read and I would recommend it to anyone, whether you are interested in the subject or not.
