Product Description

Anthology containing:

The Life of Ludwig van Beethoven, Volume I (of 3) by Alexander Wheelock Thayer
The Life of Ludwig van Beethoven, Volume II (of 3) by Alexander Wheelock Thayer
The Life of Ludwig van Beethoven, Volume III (of 3) by Alexander Wheelock Thayer

If for no other reasons than because of the long time and monumental patience expended upon its preparation, the vicissitudes through which it has passed and the varied and arduous labors bestowed upon it by the author and his editors, the history of Alexander Wheelock Thayer’s Life of Beethoven deserves to be set forth as an introduction to this work. His work it is, and his monument, though others have labored long and painstakingly upon it. There has been no considerable time since the middle of the last century when it has not occupied the minds of the author and those who have been associated with him in its creation. Between the conception of its plan and its execution there lies a period of more than two generations. Four men have labored zealously and affectionately upon its pages, and the fruits of more than four score men, stimulated to investigation by the first revelations made by the author, have been conserved in the ultimate form of the biography. It was seventeen years after Mr. Thayer entered upon what proved to be his life-task before he gave the first volume to the world—and then in a foreign tongue; it was thirteen more before the third volume came from the press. This volume, moreover, left the work unfinished, and thirty-two years more had to elapse before it was completed. When this was done the patient and self-sacrificing investigator was dead; he did not live to finish it himself nor to see it finished by his faithful collaborator of many years, Dr. Deiters; neither did he live to look upon a single printed page in the language in which he had written that portion of the work published in his lifetime. It was left for another hand to prepare the English edition of an American writer’s history of Germany’s greatest tone-poet, and to write its concluding chapters, as he believes, in the spirit of the original author.

5.0 out of 5 stars Beethoven - Life and Works 24 July 2014
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
Comprehensive history of both Beethoven's life and his music. The book contains a huge amount of detail - such details as travel expenses, difficulties and dealings with publishers, Beethovens, friends and supporters. Very detailed academic study. It could be difficult for the non-musician due to technical language and details.

2.0 out of 5 stars Eventually...you touch on Beethoven 29 July 2014
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
Very long winded trawl to get a glimpse of Beethoven 's life and works. Much of the text discusses the times he was living in and the events that could have impacted on him. It is grammatical writing in the style of decades gone by. OK if you have time on your hands otherwise plumb for a more succinct biography.

3.0 out of 5 stars This is an OLD edition of this classic -- not the most recent update by Elliott Forbes 12 Mar 2014
By Steven Ledbetter - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Kindle Edition
Alexander Wheelock Thayer was an American writer who realized, about 1850, that many people who had known Beethoven were still alive, but probably not for long. He went to Europe to do research on Beethoven's life and find as many "witnesses" to interview as possible. He devoted the rest of his life to the project, and then some, but the result was (as far as it went) a solid, well-written, well documented biography of the composer.
Over the years there were attempts to complete Thayer's work and also to add discussion of the music as well. The version in this Kindle edition was published in 1921, and remained the standard edition of Thayer's work for almost a half century. But anyone contemplating its purchase should be aware that Elliott Forbes produced an extensive update, based on all the Beethoven research done between 1921 and the late 1960s. It was published in two hardcover volumes or in one LARGE paperback by Princeton University Press.
The Thayer-Krehbiel version is certainly not without value (especially at the Kindle price), but be aware that the version edited by Elliott Forbes is the most recent update available and I suspect most people will want to read that.

5.0 out of 5 stars Long, Dense, Factual, Humorless....echt Deutsch..... 27 Jun 2014

One of THE go-to books for the composer's admirers. Its serious and thorough.
I've read it through a few times since I was a serious Beethovenista in my teens.
A.W. Thayer launched the project, but in reality, it was several subsequent German
scholars who augmented it, and saw it through.

This is the kind of work that represented German KULTUR until its demise in the early 20th century.
