I disagree with the previous reviewer (the book was so influential precisely because people sat down and read it!).
As they (wrongly) seem to focus on grammar at the expense of vocab, I'd say this is a book all English teachers should read. I don't have a copy to check, but it was surely this book that asked, "If you were dumped in a foreign country whose language you did not speak, which would you rather have: a grammar book or a dictionary?"
It also has some excellent practical ideas for focusing on vocab.

I bought this book as it was so influential in ELT. I had also been meaning to read more about the Lexical Approach since qualifying as a teacher. Compared with other ELT resource books, this is not easy to use; there is no index and the contents page is only very general, so doesn't really direct you to the part of the book you need. So you can't effectively dip in and out; you need to sit down and read the book cover to cover. This brings me to my second gripe; the text is in a small font and in a type that makes scanning for the information you want difficult.
I have found Lewis' other books The English Verb and Implementing the Lexical Approach more accessible and practicle for actually trying the approach in the classroom.
