Product Description

Product Description

A great hoard of 12th-century chesspieces was discovered in 1831 on the Isle of Lewis in the Outer Hebrides, in circumstances which have never been fully explained. Carved from walrus tusks, the Lewis chessmen have been described as "the greatest chessmen of the European Middle Ages". This illustrated account of the chesspieces is accompanied by a review of the place of the chessmen within the history of the ancient game of chess and of Romanesque art and its medieval context. Specially commissioned line drawings illustrate the intricate detail of the decorative carving and shield patterns of the pieces.

Definive work on the Lewis Chessmen 4 Jun 2005
By S. A. Meyer - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback
I recommend this book to folks with an interest in knowing much more about the Lewis chessmen.

This publication by the British Museum Press is the definitive work on the Lewis Chessmen. It has more information than the British Museum book store. It's written in a scholarly fashion; it includes the varied accounts on their discovery, along with 59 plates, technical observations, extensive footnotes, and an extensive bibliography.

I think this will be a collectible Item!!! 6 Nov 2010

Stamp collectors all know the value of mis-printed ones...

In this book, published by British Museum about their probably most distinguished collection---Lewis Chessmen, I could not believe that there are 4 mis-printed pictures: 7, 8, 12 and 15! These pictures of Kings and Queens are printed REVERSED! Is this reason why the price of this book is around USD 50?! ;)

Anyway, this is a very nicely written book about the Lewis Chessmen.
