Product Description

1973

Tina Craig has one mission in life – to escape her drunken, abusive husband. She works all the hours she can to save up enough money to leave him. She spends as little time as possible in the violent household she is forced to call home, even volunteering at a charity shop at the weekend to escape Rick’s clutches. One day, whilst sorting through the pockets of a second-hand suit which has been donated to the shop, she comes across an old letter. It is still firmly sealed and unfranked. Unable to resist the pull of curiosity, Tina opens the letter. It was written on 4th September 1939. She is so moved by the contents and bemused as to why the letter was never delivered, she embarks on a quest to find out what became of the writer and his intended recipient, a journey with consequences she could never have predicted.

1939

Billy Stirling knows he has been a fool, but he also knows how to put things right. On 4th September, 1939 he sits down to write a letter that will change his life forever. He slips it into his jacket pocket and, with a spring in his step, and full of optimism, he heads for the nearest post box. How was he to know that his heartfelt missive would not be read for another 34 years, and then by a complete stranger?

The Letter tells the story of two women, born decades apart, but whose paths are destined to cross and how one woman’s devastation leads to the other’s salvation.

More About the Author

Kathryn Hughes was born near Manchester in 1964. The Letter is her debut novel and Kathryn says she is constantly amazed and humbled that people have taken the time to read it, even though this was her intention when she wrote it! She says it is extremely gratifying that people also seem to love it. Of all the writing advice she was given, this tip by Elmore Leonard resonated the most. "When you write, try to leave out all the parts people skip."

4.0 out of 5 stars Sympathetically told. 14 April 2014
By Aurora TOP 500 REVIEWER
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
This story explores how actions taken and not taken, on the eve of war, affect the lives of all those they touch, even down to the third generation. Pride is a costly affair, and it is often others who pay the price. The lives of several people are brought together by the repercussions of an arrogant man's pride and after a lifetime of suffering for some of the characters, there is, thankfully, a happy ending to this tale. Although the story contains scenes of domestic violence, this tale is gently and sympathetically told. I found myself willing the characters to find what they were seeking, none more so than Chrissie, the naive young girl whose innocence was the catalyst for so much drama. This isn't a thriller, and doesn't have great suspense to hook the reader in, but yet has the power to enthral and to hold the attention in the hope of seeing natural justice restored, and, in seeing that the person who started the process which caused pain and separation for so many years, is the one who has lost the most, even though he does not fully realise it, we are not disappointed.

4.0 out of 5 stars Interesting story.. 5 Sep 2013
By jaffareadstoo TOP 500 REVIEWER
Format:Kindle Edition
A letter found in an abandoned set of clothing in a charity shop in the mid 1970s links the story of two women, Chrissie from the 1940s, and Tina from the more enlightened era of the mid-seventies. The parallel lives of both women are entangled in a story which reveals heart break, tragedy and loss. At first there seems to be little correlation between the two women. Tina is in an abusive relationship with a boorish and alcoholic husband, and Chrissie is the stifled daughter of a middle class doctor and his wife, who is experiences the pangs of first love, and yet over time the similarity between these two rather tragic figures will have a direct link on what happens in the story.

The book is a really interesting read, and as the lives of the two women start to evolve, they soon begin to have voices of their own, and the story starts to reveal the comparison of lives torn apart, and of the constraining nature of social boundaries.

A quick read but not a light read - Chrissie and Tina's story is one that will stay with me for a long time.

3.0 out of 5 stars enjoyable 19 May 2014
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
The book addresses some delicate issues but handles them really well. Relationships are well defined and the intertwined stories don't get mixed up. An enjoyable book with a couple of nice plot twists. Heart warming and wrenching at times. Characters well thought out. Would recommend

5.0 out of 5 stars what a good read!!!! 29 April 2014
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
As the story unfolds the characters draw you into the story and I kept reading just one more chapter when really I should have been doing other things. Although two main characters lives unfold at same time Kathryn Hughes has a wonderful way of linking both lives together although they were decades apart. Love story with a difference, no Mills and Boons this book.
