Product Description

Review

"One of rock 'n' roll's last renaissance men, Les Paul applied his electronics expertise to the instrument using magnetic pickups to give it a distinct tonal quality prized by players for over 50 years. The Gibson Les Paul is the benchmark by which all other instruments are measured..." --New Music Weekly, 18 August 2009

"On August 13, 2009 the music world lost a true innovator with the passing of Les Paul at the age of 94. Up until his final days, Les still played his standing Monday night gig at New York's Iridium Jazz Club. Few if any guitars have as rich and illustrious a reputation as a Gibson Les Paul."
--Harmony Central, 18 August 2009

Product Description

Tony Bacon's definitive guide to Gibson's most famous guitar moves into its latest and most complete version yet with this new and thoroughly revised edition. Now with 16 extra pages and 45 new pictures, this timely and retitled update of "50 Years Of The Gibson Les Paul" (2002) tells the story of one of the greatest musical instruments of the 20th century - and one that is still holding centre-stage today. Gibson's Les Paul solid body electric guitar first appeared in the early 1950s, and since then it has always been easier to list the famous guitarists who have not used one at some point or another in their careers. This improved edition of the book features a complete history of the guitar and its players - from the original Goldtop, through the Fretless Wonder and the revered 1958-60 'Burst', and on to the reissues of today. "The Les Paul Guitar Book" is the most complete guide ever to Gibson's best-known guitar and a must-have for every player and collector.

A good history 21 Mar 2010
Format:Paperback
If you are interested in the Gibson Les Paul, or have one and want to know more about how it got here, this is ideal. A bit light on technical details (no clarifaction of pickup types for example, or wiring details), so if you are a real fanatic you might need something else as well. Very comprehensive chronology though, with each model (as far as I could tell) listed, and serial number regimes explained.

why only 4 stars? This is why: Now with 16 extra pages and 45 new pictures, this timely and retitled update of "50 Years Of The Gibson Les Paul....

so if you already own a book about one of the most recognisable electric guitars in history (along with the Fender Stratocaster)do not buy this - but on the other hand if you NEED or WANT a book about the Gibson Les Paul i would go as far as saying that this is the best available at the moment.

Highly informative, with superb illustrations and even more poignant now that Les Paul himself passed away earlier this year on August 12, 2009 :(
