Format: Audio CD
In the very late sixties, between her short but musically diverse tenure at Capitol and her return to a Norman Granz label in the form of Pablo Records, Ella Fitzgerald recorded two startlingly different albums for Frank Sinatra's Reprise label. I say startlingly different, as they were in many ways rather different to the work Ella had done in the previous 30 odd years of recording.

The emphasis for `Ella' and `Things aint what they used to be' is modern songs of the day but set to a big band swinging backing and Ella's voice soaring over the top. It's pretty lively stuff, and a credit to Ella that in her mid fifties she could still pull off this kind of energetic stuff with relative ease.

This album collects the two Reprise albums together in their entirety. It opens with `Get Ready', and is a rival for Smokey Robinson's Motown original. I first came across this cover on a Northern Soul compilation, and was immediately taken with it. It's so different to her usual jazz style, but she shows that she has soul. The first album, Ella, then moves through a series of covers as diverse as Nilssen, the Beatles (with the DEFINITIVE `Got to get you into my life') and Burt Bacharach. I have to say the Bacharach cover is for me the weakest track, it's just taken a little too fast for my taste, `I'll never fall in love again' is a song that deserves to be lingered over and savoured. It's still an interesting a good performance though.

`Things aint what they used to be' is a slightly weaker album, though with some real high points including the opener, `Sunny'.

This has to be a bit of a hidden gem in the Ella Fitzgerald discography and is well worth checking out. What you get is the two LPs she recorded for Reprise after being dumped off the label that was actually built around her - Verve (the others shifted off were Zappa's Mothers of Invention and the Velvets making way for the like of the Osmonds when parent company MGM discontinued Verve as an active label), and can you really ask for a better opener than Ella in a Northern Soul style doing the Temptations' "Get Ready". Along with this you get version of George Harrison's "Savoy Truffle" from The White Album, and rather wonderful version of the Smokey penned Marvelettes classic "Hunter Get Captured By The Game", and a stonking version of "Got To Get You Into My Life" - and these are all from the 1st half on the CD originally released as the 'Ella' album in 1969.
If you like your Ella in more jazz style - then the 2nd half of this CD is for you. Comprising the 1970 'Things Aren't What They Used To Be (And You'd Better Believe It)' LP, it reunites her with long producer from her tenure on Verve, Norman Granz. Gives you her version of "Sunny', "Black Coffee" -and - best of the bunch- a wonderful version of "Heard It Through The Grapevine" which matches that of both Marvin's hit version and the earlier Gladys Knight one.

This CD contains the 2 albums that Ella Fitzgerald recorded for the Reprise label, "Ella" released in 1969 and "Things Ain't What They Used to Be (And You Better Believe It)" released in 1970. The focus, as had been the case on the album released earlier in 1969 on the German MPS label, "Sunshine of your Love", was on cover versions of popular songs. Ella show that a true jazz artist can transcend the lowly origins of the raw materials to produce true jazz gold, although some of the songs here push that theory slightly beyond breaking point (hence the 1 star deduction). Her voice is as powerful as ever and her delivery is flawless. Well worth rounding out your collection with this if you have exhausted the Verve catalogue (and of course the early Chick Webb era recordings)
