Product Description

Album Description

* The final part of Ace's trilogy in tribute to Jerry Leiber and Mike Stoller takes their story up to 1970 and embraces the usual mixture of established classics and terminal obscurities.

* The selection demonstrates the ease with which L & S coped with the writing and producing of material that went way beyond the rock`n'roll and R&B with which their names are most indelibly associated. - whether that material was uptown soul, girl group, country, latin soul or `adult contemporary'.

* As ever, the CD is complemented by a handsomely and copiously illustrated booklet and impeccable sleevenotes from Mick Patrick (with input from Mike Stoller's son, Peter).

* As before, the CD has been produced in collaboration with, and with the approval of, the men whose career it salutes. Although it's the last in Ace's series of three, it is by no means the final chapter of a story that goes on to this day and that has involved many more triumphs in the interim.

Loses a star because of the bloody awful Jimmy Scott-a worse singer to my mind than Clyde Mcphatter. His version of On Broadway just makes you want to hear the Drifters again and is as bad as theirs was good. Its in the right place for the reject button as the Peggy Lee song is just that-a Peggy Lee song with little substance.
Good to have Richie Barrett's B side to Some other guy.
Somehow you don't associate Leiber/Stoller with the song Jackson
In the next decade they would do new stuff on the Coasters and with the U K band Stealers Wheel

Not What You Might Expect 9 Dec 2004
By Michael Chiaro - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Audio CD|Amazon Verified Purchase
If you know that Rick Price was,at one time, the bass player for the Move and was hoping(or even expecting) that this would sound like an extension of the Move sound, you'd be dead wrong! This 2 cd collection veers towards the pop sound with several heavily orchestrated tracks. When it's good, it's highly enjoyable and has a baroque feel in the vein of the Left Bank. On the other hand, there are tracks(for example, covers of "Mr. Bojangles" and "Galveston") that might make you cringe. For strict rock fans, there is little of interest here. But for fans of the 60's/70's British Top 40, this will be a treasure trove of jewels to be discovered.
