Product Description

Album Description

• After a slight delay (the result of one or two licensing problems, now happily surmounted) Ace is delighted to be able to bring you Volume Two in their three volume salute to Jerry Leiber and Mike Stoller – widely regarded as the first, and quite probably the greatest of all Rock ‘n’Roll songwriters (and probably the only ones to be as famous as the songs they composed) .

• "On The Horizon" picks up the L & S story from just before their relocation to New York in 1957 through to their early years as one of the leading creative forces in New York Brill Building pop music. It features songs everyone will know (although not always in the versions you might expect to hear) and some that only diehard collectors will be familiar with, by some of the greatest names of their era.

• As you would expect, the supersized booklet is crammed with photographs, label shots and copious ephemera. The sleeve notes are by the project’s co-compiler and era expert Mick Patrick - a name that always guarantees a good read – and a man who speaks to Leiber & Stoller on a daily basis, the manager of their publishing companies Randy Poe.

• Produced with the co-operation and blessing of Leiber and Stoller themselves, this will be a must for all who already have volume 1 (CDCHD1010), and even for those who don’t

The next chapter 28 Mar 2008
By Richard
Format:Audio CD
This seems to be the only source for Richie Barrett's original of Some other guy and its nice to have cover versions of some of the songs like Stand by me,Searchin',Spanish Harlem and Smokey Joes Cafe

Needs a Spark 23 Dec 2009
By Jeffrey L. Giltenboth - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Audio CD
This is not disappointing at all, after all I am awarding 4 *s. But it is more a curiosity piece than one I'd listen too consistently. It's nice to hear some familiar songs done in a not so familiar way. Smokey Joe's Cafe not by the Robins but Buddy Holly (although I have more than one disc with Holly's on it), Stand by Me done by then Cassius Clay, Searchin' by Alvin Robinson, Spanish Harlem by Clyde McPhatter and more. There are also some songs that werre totally unknown to me. All fun to hear a time or two. The variation in the words of Lonnie Donegan's Sorry, But I'm Gonna Have To Pass from the more familiar Coaster's version now has me wondering which one is lyric written by L & S.
For better Leiber and Stoller listening, I'd recommend Ace's L & S present the Spark Records Story. Overall the songs are less recognizable but are more satisfying after numerous listens.
Better yet, buy both.
