Sub-titled '200 Hits & Rarities', this 10 CD box offers just what it says on the lid, tho it might be over-egging it a bit by use of the word 'legendary'. Yes, there are some artists here deserving the adjective - Drifters, Platters, Clovers, Coasters, Moonglows etc., but the bulk are not much more than perhaps an undeserved footnote in r&r's rich heritage. And enough to warrant a "who?" In this house. Excluding the Ames Brothers, squaresville, but with a mere four cuts from 200, that's hardly a deal breaker.

As a group, r&b and doo-wop fan, it's likely you'll have more than a few of the tracks on offer. The earliest sides, from 1951, come from the Treniers, Clovers, Cardinals and Dominoes. Other likely contenders in your collection include the Penguins (Dootone and Atlantic), Five Keys, Crescendos, Chords (and later as The Sh-Booms), Crows, Teen Queens, Chantels, Spaniels, Swallows, Robins, Turbans and so on, with plenty others I'd list as 'probables'. Nothing later than 1960, the majority being 1950s.

My favourite part of yer average Documents set is coming across the 'new' stuff; or perhaps I'd forgotten them? A bunch here included Click-Ettes, Dryna-Sores, Royal Jokers, Flyers, Ospreys, King Bees, Glowtones, Boleros, Big John & The Buzzards, Preacheroos (on Excello, apparently), Quintones (female), Rockers and more besides. It was easy enough matching labels (gotta book or two), so such as Dice, Astro, Fox, KRC, Tine Pan Alley(!), Melker, Music City, Red Top and more came to light. Just wish I could've put flesh to the bones, as is normal with Documents, no sleeve notes. I (you?) could spend endless hours on the interweb...

Check the full track listing - print a copy - check off what you've got, guaranteed you won't have them all in one place. Overall, mighty enjoyable, even the 'golden oldies' sounded refreshed in this company.

This 10 CD collection contains some tracks which will be well known to collectors, but also tracks which are less familiar. At the price it is well worth buying, and can be recommended if this is your genre.

SUPERB DOO WOP SET AT AN UNBELIEVABLY LOW PRICE 15 Aug. 2014
By TOBY - Published on Amazon.com
This purchase was a bit of a risk as there were no reviews at the time I made the purchase and I was a bit skeptical of the extremely low price. There was also no track listing. But, I went ahead and made the purchase anyway because I thought that the manufacturer was probably the same as another ten disk set which I had already purchased and was extremely happy with. This was "Shake, Rattle and Roll: Original hits and rarities from the 50's." Both of these 10 disk sets are incredible. The sound is great and the selection is fabulous with a few unusual choices for a bit of variety. The musical quality between the well known tracks and those which are lesser known is completely consistent. The sound quality, while perhaps not quite as good as the German Bear Family Records series titled "Street Corner Symphonies", which is possibly the best sound quality of all, is still very good. Certainly as good as, say, Jasmine Records. Nice clear smooth unblemished sound that is perhaps not quite as warm as Bear Family Records. But, of course, to get the supreme quality of Bear Family Records, you have to pay for it. If you want a great Doo Wop collection, well, overwhelmingly Doo Wop, you can't really lose with this set... especially at this price. My guess is that one of the reasons why the price is so reasonable is because there are no liner-notes or frills. Simple, effective, no nonsense packaging. 10 cd's with 20 songs per cd. This is 200 tracks for less than 15 dollars. If you want a great Doo Wop collection at an unbelievable price, do yourself a favor and get this set. As you really can't lose. I think that you will be as thoroughly satisfied as I am. Or, if you want to spend a lot more money, get the Bear Family Records series. As it's the best I have found.
