During the last several years an interesting development has occurred in martial arts movies: Some of them have become historical dramas rather than action adventures (whether modern or set in the "heroic age"). There is still lots of martial arts in them, but instead of villains and revenge and the battle between good and evil the focus has changed in the direction of characterization, romance and history, even if the historical aspect is often somewhat glorified for artistic reasons. A great example was the slightly spruced-up biopic of Huo Yuanjia, Fearless (2006), which rates as one of Jet Li's very best movies. Some extra glamor and action, to be sure, but on the whole a dramatization of the life story of a seminal figure in the martial arts world.

It is a very interesting development, because this sort of movies are growing more realistic and modern without compromising the moral and philosophical integrity associated with Asian martial arts. The picture they paint may still be romanticized and highly speculative, but it feels a lot more real than the conventional, hackneyed action/revenge flicks. And as long as the martial arts content remains of high quality, the true kung fu movie fan can have no complaints.

The Legend Is Born: Ip Man (2010) is another movie of this intriguing kind. The backdrop to the core conflict is not some far-fetched personal feud, but a historical element leading back to China's unfortunate predicament in getting caught between a rock and a hard place in the Russo-Japanese war of 1904-05 (the Russians and the Japanese basically fought over which one of them should annex Manchuria, a part of China). This conflict set the agenda for the bad relations between China and Japan for decades thereafter.

2.0 out of 5 stars First half good, second half poor 7 April 2011
I watched this after reading some good reviews from other sites including amazon. Have seen Ip Man and thought it was amazing so I might be biased so take this review with a pinch of salt.
I honestly thought the first half including Ip Mans growth was great. The crushes etc left me cold but was good to see other aspects of his life that weren't shown in Ip Man.

The second, possibly and probably last third just seemed like any straight to DVD movie. A bad guy and woman, a lady in distress and even for Bloodsport and Double Impact fans, one scene where he can't see which brought up memories of both the above films.

If you haven't seen Ip Man then this is OK but it feels like they just chucked in some Hollywood ending in and thought that would be OK.

3.0 out of 5 stars Its ok.. not as good as Ip Man 1 & 2 4 Sep 2010
By Man
i have ip man 1 and 2 and they were great. i thought there would be a deeper storyline in this film. the fighting is good but not enough of it and its mainly talking. the storyline is a bit stupid and Donnie Yen was a much better Ip Man, but they did find a very similar lookalike.
Overall its worth a watch but dont expect it to be better than the previous titles.

1.0 out of 5 stars region A Locked 29 Sep 2013
Format:Blu-ray|Verified Purchase
I am not happy with this.
The Bluray version is Region A locked!
bluray comes with bluray copy+dvd.
I tried both on my ps3 and they did not work!

screw this, i'm gonna pirate movies.
it just annoys me that distributors do not want people to pirate movies, yet they don't make it available for many countries.
Wtf if you don't want people to pirate your movies then distribute them all over the damn world!

I'm going to have to sell my copy now.
why should i buy the Region B dvd copy? i don't watch dvd anymore, I have a damn bluray player so I want to use my bluray player to watch bluray movies.
It's like having a 4 bed room big house and you're living and sleeping in the car garage.

Not as good as the previous 2 films, but had a lot to live up to. probably best to watch this one first, before Ip Man and Ip Man 2.
