As with most of Daviid Gemmell's books, I read this in the space of a few afternoons. The book starts with Druss as an old man, defending the Drenai lands in a massive and ferocious battle against the Nadir which is told in "Legend" as Gemmell fans will recognise. During a break from the fighting, Druss recants his past adventures to a young and frightened soldier. The book describes his exploits in gritty fashion, mixed with a sense of high drama and magnificence. The climax is absolutely awe-inspiring and I recommend this book as a must for David Gemmell fans. For those people who haven't read any of Gemmell's books : Where have you been these last ten years? He is probably the best living fantasy writer in the business so either beg, steal or borrow a copy.
