Book Description

6 April 2009
Colton H. Bryant grew up in Wyoming and never once wanted to leave it. Wyoming loved him and he loved it back. Two things helped Colton get through school and the neighbourhood bullies: his best friend Jake and his favourite mantra: Mind over matter -- which meant to him: if you don't mind, it don't matter. Colton and Jake grew up wanting nothing more that the freedom to sleep out under the great Wyoming night sky, and to be just like Jake's dad, Bill, a strong, gentle man of few words who can ride rodeo like nobody's business. When Colton started work as a driller on a rig, despite his young wife begging him to quit, he claimed it was in his blood. Colton did die young and he died on the rig -- falling to his death because the oil company neglected to spend the $2,000 on safety rails. His family received no compensation. The strong, sad story of Colton H. Bryant's life could not be told without the telling of the land that grew him, where there are still such things as cowboys roaming the plains, where it is relationships that get you through and where a simple, soulful and just man named Colton H. Bryant lived and died.

5.0 out of 5 stars Read it and weep..... 18 Jun 2008
Format:Paperback
This is the true story of the short life of Wyoming roughneck Colton H Bryant. It's about people and place and politics. It's a polemic aginst the oil industry's disregard for the environment and its workforce. It's a real life Annie Proulx story.

If you are familiar with Alexandra Fuller's memoirs of Africa you will know how she can conjure up the smell and feel of a place and bring the cast of characters to life.

The Legend Of Colton H Bryant is even better than her first two books. The prose is as lean and tough as the Bryant family and the landscape they inhabit. Read this angry, sad, powerful, wonderful book and feel a sense of loss for a man you never knew.

5.0 out of 5 stars A modern day classic 30 July 2008
Format:Paperback
An excellent read bringing an inevitable tear to the eye. The pain, dirt and outright inevitability of this tragedy makes you realise how cosseted many of us are. The tight prose and dialogue pulls you in. I've already started using some of the quotes - Cowboy Up Cupcake, everyone has their freakin' problems.

5.0 out of 5 stars a privillege to read and know! 27 Aug 2008
Format:Paperback
Can only agree with the other two reviewers. I adored the writing style, language and real life characters. This book is now doing the rounds - family and friends are enjoying it. It's especially poignant that the demise of this young man should touch all those that choose to read his legend! Loved it!
