4.0 out of 5 stars Quietly brilliant - an excellent debut 3 Oct 2011
Format:Paperback
It's a little disconcerting that the plot summary on the jacket of this book, and even the tagline on the cover ('what has happened to Ingrid?'), give away key points of the plot before you've even begun reading. The blurb describes this as a story about a young Australian woman, Ingrid, who goes missing in New York on 9/11, and the search undertaken by her two best friends, Julia (the narrator) and Ralph, to uncover the truth of what really happened to her. While it's true that this forms the centre of the story, 9/11 - and, therefore, Ingrid's disappearance - doesn't occur until almost 200 pages in. Additionally, the short prologue - the only part of the book narrated by Ingrid rather than Julia - lets the reader in on a secret the other characters are unaware of; that Ingrid's husband, Gil Grey, a much older art dealer, was physically abusive towards her. But prior to Ingrid's disappearance, the narrative concentrates on character-building: establishing the calm, intelligent, sometimes insecure voice of Julia, the background of the protagonists' friendship and family ties, and the love triangle between them.

The Legacy owes a significant debt to a number of other literary works. It's apparently based on The Portrait of a Lady by Henry James, which I can't comment much on as I haven't read it (though, on the basis of a brief description, I can see that the basic plot outline and character names in The Legacy are an obvious homage).

1.0 out of 5 stars didnt like it 24 Jan 2011
Format:Paperback
I did not enjoy this book at all. Over blown and self-indulgent, I persevered hoping it would get better. It didnt. I had no empathy for the characters and by the end had no desire at all to find out 'whatever happened to Ingrid'

5.0 out of 5 stars Novel of friendships and unrequited loves 23 Aug 2010
By Carla Ford - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback
Great novel about the mysteries of friendship and love. Julia and Ralph have been best friends for some time as students in Sydney. When Ralph's cousin Ingrid comes to live with Ralph's family, both Ralph and Julia are meeting her for the first time. Jealous of the bond Ralph and Ingrid form, Julia still can't help being drawn to Ingrid, and the three form a friendship that lasts until Ingrid marries and moves to New York. Although Ingrid disappears in the 9/11 bombing of the World Trade Center, it is a year before Julia goes to New York to learn about her friend's life there. Filled with examples of the intricacies of relationships, this novel examines the bonds that people form in friendships, casual acquaintances and intimate relationships. It really pulls you into the mystery surrounding Ingrid's last days, and her relationships in New York as Julia comes closer to solving her unanswered questions. A full cast of characters, some worthy of their own novels.

3.0 out of 5 stars Beautiful but Disconnected 30 Oct 2010
By Dabby Cool - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback
Thanks to the publisher and goodreads for the free review copy.

The Legacy focuses on Julia, Ralph, and Ingrid, three (sometimes) close friends. When Ingrid disappears in New York after the events of 9/11, Julia heads to the Big Apple to investigate.

This book is an homage to The Portrait of a Lady by Henry James; Ingrid's situation mirrors in part Isabel's in Portrait. It's quite a high order for one's first novel to be inspired by a classic work, but the author's literary background certainly explains the aspiration.

The Legacy is sometimes too clever for its own good, particularly in the numerous literary and pop cultural references perhaps meant to serve as shorthand for evoking moods or feelings associated with those referenced works. That is not to say the author takes shortcuts; this novel is very luxuriously paced, with no sense of urgency.

Undoubtedly Ms. Tranter is a talented writer, and her descriptions are so vivid that I was present wherever Julia was. Nevertheless, an emotional disconnect forced me to distance myself. Yes, unrequited love can be romantic in its way, but all the pining described constituted the petulant sort. And for all the investigation that Julia conducts to find Ingrid, the journey is all about discovering Julia. That is not in itself an ignoble cause, except that we must care for Julia. I did not care enough for any of these people.

Three stars for the exquisite writing and admirable aspirations.

4.0 out of 5 stars Beautiful story of mystery 7 April 2011
By bookreader "Melanie" - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback
Thank you for such a good book. The story started off a bit slow, there was quite of bit of background information given on how the 3 main characters met and their relationship to each other. But I thought the writing was very beautiful. You find out right away that Ingrid goes missing and Julia begins to discover that her death/disappearance may not be as it first seems. I couldn't wait to finish this novel and the ending did not disappoint me. A really satisfying, good read.
