Book Description

Mar 2007
West of Theft, on a vast stretch of ocean known as the Wastes, the free-ship Suncurl pilots its way along the Lees of Laughter's end, away from the city of Lamentable Moll. Aboard the ship, three passengers have become the subject of the crew's gossip: the luckless manservant Emancipor Reese, and his masters, the homicidal necromancers known as Bauchelain and Korbal Broach. But a bizarre force pursues them along the cursed sea-lane known as Laughter's End, even as an arcane thing awakens aboard the Suncurl. What secrets do the captain and her First Mate conceal from the rest of the crew? What lurks in the darkness of the ship's hold? And what of the eunuch's strange behavior... or his frightening offspring?

3.0 out of 5 stars Not bad but not amazing either 4 Feb 2008
By jms452
Format:Hardcover
If you are new to Erikson's novella then they are both different and very similar to his full length novels.
Similar in that almost as much happens (i.e. the sheet volume of stuff going on) in the novella as in the novel.
Different in that the build up and lots of the great narrative is lost.

This is worth reading if you are a real Erikson fan and want your fix whilst you're waiting for the next novel. However, if you were to pick this up as an uninitiated fantasy reader you would probably not be particularly impressed (especially if you paid £25 for it).

3.0 out of 5 stars Mainly for Fans and collectors 5 Jun 2008
Format:Hardcover
I appreciate what JMS is saying, £25 is alot of money for a short novella. But these books are becoming collectors items too and they are not easy to come by. I bought Blood Follows for a whopping £50 and when I received it I thought WTF. I now see copies on sale in excess of £150 so the initial blow has lessened somewhat. All these books are limited editions, I have tried to get these books through Amazon before with no success and I have had to go to a specialist bookshop to get them. This time I have had to settle for an unsigned limited edition(I'll have to wait until he tours the UK again and get his signature), so believe me when I say they are snapped up quickly. So if you do get a copy consider yourself part of an exclusive club.

Another fantastic book from Steven Erikson, adding to the lives of some of the most interesting side characters from the Malazan Book of the Fallen series.
