Product Description

Early reviewers say:

"A smartly written tale of intrigue and betrayal"
"Brimming with magic and mystery"
"A fast-paced yet nuanced story of shattered relationships in an absorbing foreign setting of historical importance"

Overview:

What more could life offer? A posting to one of the most beautiful cities in the world, Mediterranean sun just two hours away from mountain snow. Exciting new friends - a madcap American journalist and his exotic Palestinian girlfriend. For newcomers to Beirut. Richard and Claire Devine, there was no telling where the world ended and heaven began.

Or hell.

As clashes break out in the city suburbs, everyone knows it's no problem. 'The fighting will stop at the weekend so they can get to the beach.' It doesn't. And lives change. Forever.

Independent reviewer 'Professional Old Guy' looks for authors who 'push the envelope'. He says:

"As the field of indie publishing broadens it will be books like this that will shape it ... one of the best choices available to put on a Kindle"

5.0 out of 5 stars Love & Life in Lebanon 31 May 2010
By Carlyle Clark - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Kindle Edition
Alan Mile's, THE LEBANESE TROUBLES, succeeds admirably as the 1st person tale of Richard Devine, a married young Brit, fresh to fatherhood, in a war-torn Lebanon. The most important element of this book is that it makes you remember that that there are regular people in Lebanon who are trying to live their lives amidst the madness. Struggling with the emotional demands of marriage and fatherhood, he becomes entranced by the beguiling Palestinian Monique, and falls under the almost magical spell of her lover, the mysterious and charismatic newsman Lawrence Andersen, whose--like Dean Moriarty in Kerouac's ON THE ROAD--own inner drive toward chaos sparks the protagonist journey of not only self discovery, but the discovery of the worries and wonders of Lebanon. Granted, it is Lebanon from the viewpoint of a Westerner with as a Westerner protagonist, but the Lebanese characters are never presented as stereotypical or one-dimensional, and most wonderfully, Mile's descriptive skills and his portrayal of Devine's experience makes Lebanon herself into the main character, and one brimming with the magic and mystery. A great read.

5.0 out of 5 stars A smartly written and absorbing novel 8 May 2010
By Sue Hall - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Kindle Edition
The Lebanese Troubles is a smartly written tale of intrigue and betrayal, told in first-person narrative by the sometimes hapless-seeming main character that is portrayed by author, Alain Miles, with just the right trace of sardonic humor.

The author draws heavily on his extensive experience living in the Middle East to bring each scene in the book vividly to life, with detailed and authentic descriptions of both Lebanon and its people that kept me fully engaged. He effectively uses the subject of war as a metaphor to explore the theme of disintegration of intimate relationships, and the reader is left contemplating the nature of loyalty and trust in everyday life.

This book is a great read for anyone who enjoys a fast-paced yet nuanced story of shattered relationships in an absorbing foreign setting of historical importance. I recommend it most highly!

5.0 out of 5 stars Nice Indy Exploration 25 April 2010
By Dad - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Kindle Edition|Amazon Verified Purchase
Very interesting book across the board. The writing style seems to mesh well with the ebook medium and that is rare even with Amazon distributed ebooks(How tempting at this point to say it was well-done.) As the field of indy publishing broadens it will be books like this that will shape it. It moves very well and throws out numerous topics to engage you in something other than a straight plot line, and the innovative use of a French dialogue form, somewhat adapted to electronic publishing is a big push on the envelope. Miles is good enough that even when he makes a seeming mistake, you're not really sure he didn't mean to make it. The Lebanese Troubles is a book that uses the medium well and one of the best choices available to put on a Kindle.
