Superb 14 Oct 2011
Format:Mass Market Paperback
I was shocked to see this only has three stars, so I felt compelled to stick my opinion in!! I read this years ago, and have looked it up just now because I'm doing an MA in Creative Writing and want to cite it as an example in a discussion of narrative structure. So the book has stayed with me this long. Turow recreates the feel of the 1960s, of racial tensions and radicalism, of the idealism of youth, superbly, and then overlays that with the poignancy of middle-aged reflection on what happend in the past, and what might have been. Brilliant book. Is it long and over-written? Possibly. But that's like saying why spend half an hour luxuriating in a hot bath with oils and a glass of wine when a quick shower will do the job just as well...

If you want to read a simple legal thriller, follow the advice of the other reviewers and stay away from this book. But... if you are old enough to remember the sixties, or if you are curious about that bygone era of racial violence, this book delivers the goods. The vibrant atmosphere and the real life characters make it a fascinating read.

By M. A. Ramos TOP 1000 REVIEWER
Format:Mass Market Paperback
The complex story is told in two alternating tracks, with the first set in a lightly fictionalized late 60's Berkeley, and the second set in Turow's present-day Kindle County. The main character, Sonny, finds herself the judge of a murder trial involving people she has known for twenty years, and must decide it without the assistance of a jury.

This book is very long and complex. You will need patiences for a story to get to the point. But, Turow writes extremely well and ranges widely, taking on gang culture, judicial corruption, and the ever present political manipulations. And he always has very interesting character at the center of his tale. I would suggest this not be the first Turow book you read.

SCOTT TUROW'S VERY BEST
I understand the comments that this book is overly long and needed some editing but for me this is the prize of his fictional writing. Read more

Disappointment
Scott Turow's first two books (Presumed Innocent and The Burden of Proof) were both excellent stories. However, since then he seems to have been in a steady decline. Read more

Sad lack of red pencil
This door-stopper of a novel mainly consists of a blow-by-blow account of a no-jury trial, told by the judge herself. Read more

Snoring and disappointing
I have to admit that I listened to the audio version first, then for what I have yet to determine reason, I punished myself with the book. I was so disappointed. A waste of time. Read more

Sloppy, dull
I agree with others who find this over-written. I was also SO annoyed with the typos and grammatical errors that riddled the book. Read more

Less than his best
This is one of my very favorite authors (much better thanGrisham), so I was disappointed in this book. I went to college in the 60s in California, so I know the environment. Read more

OK, but tries to take on too much and fizzles
WAY too long! Turow fans will be sorely disappointed, I'm afraid. The usual can't-wait-to-turn-the-page-and-find-out-what-happens-next is GONE. Read more

Read it for Turow's mastery at characterization
Awesome work. As the NY Times put it, this is has elements of both "The Big Chill" and "Bonfire of the Vanities. Read more
