Biography

For about six years, from 1968 through 1975, the Band was one of the most popular and influential rock groups in the world, their music embraced by critics (and, to a somewhat lesser degree, the public) as seriously as the music of the Beatles and the Rolling Stones. Their albums were analyzed and reviewed as intensely as any records by their one-time employer and sometime mentor Bob Dylan. ... Read more in Amazon's The Band Store

Product Description

On Thanksgiving Day 1976, The Band (Rick Danko, Levon Helm, Hudson, Richard Manuel, and Robertson) took the stage for the very last time at the Winterland Theatre in San Francisco for The Last Waltz. Joining The Band on stage throughout the evening was an unprecedented group of pioneers in music including Eric Clapton, Neil Diamond, Bob Dylan, Dr. John, Joni Mitchell, Van Morrison, Muddy Waters, and Neil Young, among others. This four CD packaged reformat includes all the original audio content from the 2002 version, and is another way to own this incredible compendium of work from some legendary songwriters of our time.

If you don't already know it, The Last Waltz was The Band's farewell concert on Thanksgiving Day 1976 at San Francisco's Winterland Ballroom. It was a sumptuous affair involving many guest performers, in order of appearance; Ronnie Hawkins, Dr. John, Bobby Charles, Paul Butterfield, Muddy Waters, Eric Clapton, Neil Young, Joni Mitchell, Neil Diamond, Van Morrison and Bob Dylan. The Staples and Emmylou Harris also contributed to studio tracks. The event was famously filmed for cinema release by Martin Scorsese.

Much of the concert has been available on a triple vinyl/double CD set for a number of years. However, this box set is the first time however we have been able to hear the complete concert in it's original running order. There are four discs of material running for just over four hours including many previously unreleased concert tracks, some rehearsals and a few studio odds and ends. All the tracks have been remixed and re-mastered and sound suitably sparkling. The set comes in a hardback book type cover with an 80 page booklet containing many concert pics, and an interesting essay by David Fricke. It costs a bit more than the standard release, so, is it worth it?

There are some hidden gems to discover. One is the previously unreleased performance of Muddy Waters on 'Caledonia'. Another is a rare live rendition of 'Acadian Driftwood' that is truly wonderful. The Band are on terrific form throughout, and most of their guests come up to the mark. Note though that having more Young/Mitchell/Dylan etc. sometimes yields weaker material. You get extra Band only performances too, and they are mostly fine, though I still prefer many of the Rock of Ages versions. Some of the jams and rehearsals seem a bit superfluous. Overall I feel that they got the track selection more or less right on the original release. However this handsome box set is essential for Band diehards and completists.

Note: This is The Band, not the Derek Trucks Band!

As the title of the review suggests, I'm a big fan of this album - which, if you own it - you need to bring out periodically to experience what a great concert this was.

(And I'd suggest it may well be the best live film too - just to see what life is like on the road - as well as being a part of the concert experience).

The premise is that after 16 years on the road, The Band decided to get off the merry-go-round, Scorcese filming the concert and what a way to go out eh ?

Bob Dylan, Muddy Waters, Joni Mitchell, Neil Young, Neil Diamond, Bobby Charles, Van Morrison (and in off-concert scenes, Emmylou Harris and The Staple Singers) et al ..... all showed up to pay their respects (and this was reciprocated by The Band themselves).

To sum it all up, when Neil Young gets on stage and says "I'd like to say that it's one of the pleasures of my life to be on the stage with these people here tonight", you know that it's a heartfelt comment from the great man himself.

And what a show it is! Levon Helm and Rick Danko sing like it WILL be their last show and are going to go out with a bang. They do !

The eclectic mix of music is superb too, from cajun to rock, to folk to soul and blues to even Caledonia soul (Van the man) this shows what a great bunch of musicians Robbie, Levon, Garth, Rick and Richard were. Dylan recognised it without doubt !

This album (and/or DVD) is heartily recommended - as would be Don McLean's "Solo", Thin Lizzy's "Live And Dangerous", "Frampton Comes Alive", Van Morrison's "It's Too Late To Stop Now" amongst others.

Many punters speak very negatively of the 70's (glam rock et cetera) but, there was such a wealth of talent out there and some made it and some didn't. I am all the happier for listening to a lot of music such as this during this decade.

this is for the more compact version of the rhino last waltz box set. it's about 2/3rd's the size of the original packaging, it's not textured anymore (just classy matte) and the booklet has been made slightly more compact. the music remains the same as it was: perfect. i think this was a bit of a glory project for robbie in some ways as a few of the "previously unreleased" selections aren't really worth having except for archival purposes. which is why most people will buy this actually. forget what i just said, let's thank robbie for these additional sketches and rehearsals. everything sounds tight, you can tell it's remixed and remastered from the original release in 1978. playing the vinyl versions of these songs then switching to these versions is like night and day in the best way.

if you like the band, you have no excuse. put your money down.

Quite simply The Band were one of the greatest Rock N Roll bands ever. This is a recording of their farewell concert in 1976 (at least in the classic line-up with Robbie Robertson on guitar). The Bands music on its own would merit purchase of this disc. They run through a 'best of' set, that as a concert would be hard to beat.

Add to this the guest list, and you have one of the best rock concerts of all time. Van Morrison in his hey day belting out 'Caravan'. Joni Mitchell singing 'Coyote'. Dylan with Robbie Robertson burning incendiary guitar licks behind him. Muddy Waters, Paul Butterfield, Neil Diamond, Neil Young, Dr John, Eric Clapton... The list goes on and on.

A few numbers were recorded seperately after the concert, these are included on the CD as well. The best of which is a magnificent version of 'The Weight' featuring The Staples singers. If you haven't heard Mavis Staples, and you like gospel influenced music this takes what was already a great song to a new level.

The same year this was recorded Punk came on the scene and changed music for ever. But it doesn't matter whether you were brought up on Elvis Presley, The Sex Pistols, Nirvana or Coldplay, this music is as essential now as it was 31 years ago.
