Biography

For about six years, from 1968 through 1975, the Band was one of the most popular and influential rock groups in the world, their music embraced by critics (and, to a somewhat lesser degree, the public) as seriously as the music of the Beatles and the Rolling Stones. Their albums were analyzed and reviewed as intensely as any records by their one-time employer and sometime mentor Bob Dylan. ... Read more in Amazon's The Band Store

4.0 out of 5 stars THE ULTIMATE LAST WALTZ SET 16 Nov 2009
Format:Audio CD|Amazon Verified Purchase
If you don't already know it, The Last Waltz was The Band's farewell concert on Thanksgiving Day 1976 at San Francisco's Winterland Ballroom. It was a sumptuous affair involving many guest performers, in order of appearance; Ronnie Hawkins, Dr. John, Bobby Charles, Paul Butterfield, Muddy Waters, Eric Clapton, Neil Young, Joni Mitchell, Neil Diamond, Van Morrison and Bob Dylan. The Staples and Emmylou Harris also contributed to studio tracks. The event was famously filmed for cinema release by Martin Scorsese.

Much of the concert has been available on a triple vinyl/double CD set for a number of years. However, this box set is the first time however we have been able to hear the complete concert in it's original running order. There are four discs of material running for just over four hours including many previously unreleased concert tracks, some rehearsals and a few studio odds and ends. All the tracks have been remixed and re-mastered and sound suitably sparkling. The set comes in a hardback book type cover with an 80 page booklet containing many concert pics, and an interesting essay by David Fricke. It costs a bit more than the standard release, so, is it worth it?

There are some hidden gems to discover. One is the previously unreleased performance of Muddy Waters on 'Caledonia'. Another is a rare live rendition of 'Acadian Driftwood' that is truly wonderful. The Band are on terrific form throughout, and most of their guests come up to the mark. Note though that having more Young/Mitchell/Dylan etc. sometimes yields weaker material. You get extra Band only performances too, and they are mostly fine, though I still prefer many of the Rock of Ages versions. Some of the jams and rehearsals seem a bit superfluous. Overall I feel that they got the track selection more or less right on the original release. However this handsome box set is essential for Band diehards and completists.

Note: This is The Band, not the Derek Trucks Band!

5.0 out of 5 stars Even better second time around. 26 May 2002
Format:Audio CD
This is the album that fans of the film & vhs tape of the Last Waltz have been waiting for for years. There was double CD release but there were 19 tracks held back until now. With this box set we have the full picture & what a sight for sore eyes it is. This is Blues/Rock at it's very best, played with passion by craftsmen/women who know their trade to the last note & most of whom are still around today having improved like a good wine. The word superstar has been bandied about with great frequency in recent years with shows like Pop Idol, Big Brother etc etc. What this has done is devalue genuine artistes & in the process lower the tone of music in general. If you really want to hear the real thing get a copy of the Last Waltz, listen to it a few times & then scan today's Top 20. There's a DVD on the way in the very near future crammed with extras & if that fails to convince the unbelievers nothing will. Events like the Last Waltz happen once in a lifetime. Some of us are lucky,we're getting second helpings.

5.0 out of 5 stars Astounding! 4 Dec 2004
Format:Audio CD
This collection brings together the very best of The Band, one of music's most consistently under-rated and unrecognised groups, and includes examplary pieces from a host of other guest performers, whose music "defines a generation" - Van Morrison, Eric Clapton, Bob Dylan, Dr John, Neil Young, Joni Mitchell and more.

If you like any of these artists this CD set is very deinitely worth considering, as their performances, while different to how you might previously have heard them, are electric and innovative, supported as they are by five wonderful musicians (The Band.) And if you like The Band, or sixties/seventies rock, soul etc in general, then it is a must! You won't hear better, I promise.

To isolate any of the songs in this set would be to do something of a disservice to the others which aren't mentioned, but here goes anyway - of particular note are Bob Dylan's rocking medley 'Forever Young/Baby let me follow you down' and Van Morrison's frankly indescribable 'Caravan'!

This collection includes material not present on the DVD release of 'The Last Waltz', so this recommendation even extends to people who own the disc.
