You may be drawn to this title if you are a fan of Simon Scarrow, Conn Iggulden or the master of historical fiction, Bernard Cornwell. You may have read the excellent work on a similar theme by James Wilde or James Aitcheson. If you are looking for more of the same, think again. There is a plot of sorts as the book leads up to the battle of Stamford Bridge in 1066 but the various plot lines are flimsy at best. There is no tension or excitement and the coverage of the supposed action scenes (ie the fighting) are woefully inadequate. It is impossible to identify with any of the characters and the major hook of sibling rivalry between England's new king (Harold) and his estranged brother Tostig is barely developed. In 40 years I've put down only a handful of books without finishing them - I battled on to the end of this one but it was a close run thing. They say there is a book in everyone and the publication of this book should give hope to all those striving to write theirs.

Rather a laboured novel with too much unnecessary background information. I lost the desire to finish it as it could not hold my attention

Harold crowned King of England is faced with enemies from all sides. Who will invade first? This is Coates second book and it should have been first, being the prequel to Hastings. Not as good as the first, but, it gives the reader the problem Harold faced with the logistics of having to spread his army yet have them available for battle.

This is a period close to my heart. I may not have read everything ever published about it, but have certainly given it a good shot. I wanted to enjoy The Last Viking 1066 but found it impossible. After struggling on to around page 50, and even then not all in one session, I gave it up. The dialogue between the characters lame, stilted and written in modern-day English with no attempt to write or create a 1066 feel to it. How do such poor novels as this ever get to publication?
