Product Description

The Last of Us: Remastered will run in 1080p on PlayStation 4 and, thanks to the power provided, deliver enhanced visuals including higher resolution character models, improved lighting and shadows and upgraded textures to enhance the the world that Joel and Ellie must survive as their story unfolds.;The Last of Us comes from Naughty Dog, the critically-acclaimed creators of the Uncharted series. This is a tale that could not be further from the daredevil adventuring of Nathan Drake, but one that highlights the award-winning cinematic storytelling, performance capture, and high-production values that Naughty Dog have become famous for.;The Last of Us takes place in a bleak future, twenty years after a fungal infection has wiped out much of humanity, turning them in to mutated savages. Those who survived are not much better, with survivors huddled together in quarantined zones, struggling and scavenging for the remaining food, weapons - and anything else they can get their hands on.;'Joel is such a survivor, living a life of smuggling and black marketeering - and one with few morals. He's hired to transport a teenage girl named Ellie across the country, but what seems like a simple job turns into a desperate and profound journey across what remains of America.;The Last of Us presents a familiar but dangerous United States, with Joel and Ellie experiencing a stunning but brutal country as they travel. Escaping their home in Boston, you'll explore an America that has been thoroughly transformed over the last two decades. Nature has reclaimed much of the land, with overgrown plantlife further devastating the ruins of the cities you travel through.;The Last of Us offers classic survival gameplay with a sense of danger and fear that is not often seen in today's games. Playing as Joel, you'll need to learn to work together with Ellie if either of you are to survive this horrific landscape where food, ammo and other supplies are extremely limited. You'll need to scavenge for what you need, craft weapons from what you can find and compete with other survivors in a land where the true limits of humanity will be tested - and where new threats are waiting at every turn.;You'll need to combat both the infected savages and your fellow survivors. Like the best survival games, you'll need to keep your wits about you and fight smart, avoiding encounters when you can and making every bullet, every shiv and every attack count. But your enemies will be fighting smart, too. Thanks to the Balance of Power AI system, your foes will constantly adapt, changing their behaviour based on your actions, the weapon they see you carrying, or how many of them are left to fight.

The Last of Us is a narrative driven survival adventure in a world torn apart by a fungal outbreak that has devastated mankind and turned it's victims into mindless and dangerous hosts who's only intent is to harm and infect others.

I originally owned this on PS3 and played it through twice, considering it one of the best gaming experiences I had ever had. I recently had the chance to get this digitally in a mid week sale and jumped at the chance to get the game and play its expansion (Left Behind) for the first time.

The game plays out as a third person action game in which you play as Joel, a survivor tasked to see his young charge Elly safely into the hands of others and it evoked memories of "The Road" for me as they made their way across this ruined world facing horrific foes both human and otherwise. The relationship that develops between the two and their development as characters is brilliantly written and something games rarely achieve... believable characters who you truly care about come the end. Their journey is so beautifully written.

I've now played the game a third time and also played the DLC and I think I love this game more than ever. It might well be my all time favourite.

This game was the very best PS3 had to offer for me and has now jumped ahead as the very best on PS4. The game looks lovely and benefits from the additional power of PS4 to be presented in 1080P, it plays great and it has two of the best characters I've ever had the pleasure of experiencing.

This is a gem, miss it at your peril.

What's so special about this game is that it works both as a survival horror game and as a grippingly emotional story.

The Story (no spoilers)

The opening prologue is a masterpiece of both storytelling and game design. It presents rising action that escalates to a shocking and emotional conclusion, and immediately sets up the rest of the story. 15 minutes into the game, I was doing what I usually do during a well-told film: I was anticipating and looking forward expectantly to the rest of the adventure.

As if that wasn't surprising enough in a videogame, the game makers went on to do something 99% of Hollywood filmmakers fail to master: they refused to play to my expectations, they paced the dramatic peaks and valleys properly, they used humour effectively as emotional relief, and they constantly surprised me.

I can honestly say that the direction the story took, and its eventual outcome, was utterly unexpected and genuinely morally upsetting. It was not just unexpected for a video game - it's the kind of ending you'd need a Roman Polankski to pull off successfully in a movie. So as a piece of storytelling, TLOU for me is the near-equal of No Country For Old Men, or Chinatown, or The Road in its sober and morally ambiguous intentions. In the video game world, this makes it instantly the Citizen Kane of video games, because the dramaturgy of most games is worse than in kindergarten books. In this respect, it's absolutely peerless.

The Game

The gameplay - third person exploration, collecting, shooting, stealth, light puzzle solving - is extremely solid. It is, I think by design, stressful overall.

Gunplay is violent.

You will be in one of two camps, the first that simply never played the PS3 version of The Last of US and the Second that did and are wondering whether or not to upgrade to the PS4 version. For those in the first category, can I suggest you slap yourself around the face because you really did miss out! Joking aside lets talk about the game.

The Last of Us really was a triumph of what developers could create if they put their mind to it. Crucially the developers weren't pushed into rushing the game and as such when it did arrive on PS3 it was exactly as they intended. In my book the PS3 version even to this day remains one of the best games going and is certainly in my top 10 games ever.

So what is The Last of US? It's a Third person based, role playing adventure/horror game. You must survive in post apocalyptic America where a mutated fungus has taken hold and infected virtually everyone. It's edge of the seat stuff from beginning to end and really does showcase how good games can be!

Rather than waffling on and going into the ins and outs of everything in the game I simply want to say a few things about the differences between the PS3 and PS4 versions. While I wouldn't necessarily say it's worth upgrading to the next gen version if you still own a copy of the PS3 edition, as the PS3 edition was truly brilliant in itself. Be in no doubt that the graphics do look better with better textures and indeed the frame rate clearly running at a higher level (60 frames a second) and you can tell that simply by the fight scenes and shootouts as they run smoother on screen with no screen lag or graphical shudder (there wasn't exactly a lot of that in the PS3 edition but now it's completely gone).
