4.0 out of 5 stars Sword and Sandal 14 Oct 2012
By MarkOne
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
An enjoyable 'sword and sandal' fiction that is (very) loosely based around the Achaean Wars and the Battle of Corinth of the second century BC. There isn't a great deal of back-story or characterisation, and the book is fairly compact rather than the sprawling epic we usually see for the Roman era.

There are a few proof-reading errors; I especially appreciated the observation that a battle might be decided by velour (sic)! The author also had a tendency to exaggerate the size of armies without any clear reason.

Overall, The Spartan was a good undemanding read with plenty of action.

2.0 out of 5 stars Don't buy! 1 Jan 2013
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
I am very interested in the history of this period, but this book was a big disappointment for me. I think there might be quite a few historical inaccuracies, the style of writing is poor and, quite frankly,I only finished reading it because it was something to do...I try, whenever possible, not to leave a book unfinished, but this was a struggle for me this time. Of all the books I have read, this has to be one of the worst...in my opinion.

2.0 out of 5 stars Blood, lots of it... 29 Jan 2014
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
...but little more. While based on historical events, the characters are barely developed. Many spelling errors and some editing might have helped, as well.

5.0 out of 5 stars Well written and intersting 4 Jan 2013
Format:Kindle Edition
I got into The Spartan very quickly and was cast back to the times of the Romans. If you liked films like "The Gladiator" then you will enjoy this. It is a good work of fiction that envelopes you in at times some quite fast paced action. It is a work of fiction so historical liabilities have been taken, these have no bearing on the actual story, that unfolds into a rich literary tapestry. A well written story that moves along at a decent pace with plenty of interest to hold your attention.

1.0 out of 5 stars Spartan 5 July 2013
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
Unexciting, boring, historically wobbly. A very dull read, ploughing though an uninspiring story containing many grammatical errors. Stick to photography, Mr. Rogers.

Entertaining read, I would of preferred maybe a little more detail in the character's backstories. I would recommend this to other users.

5.0 out of 5 stars The Spartan
A book with a nice little twist. This is a well written book about a Spartan warrior written from the servents / slave perspective.
