Book Description

Tommy O’Shea is raising his seven younger brothers and sisters without any help from his drug abusing father and stepmother. Since he was fifteen years old, he's managed to keep the children fed and out of foster care. It takes up every ounce of his energy and the last thing he needs is romance complicating his life further.

Rookie cop Bobby McAlister doesn't belong in Tommy’s harsh world, but Tommy can’t push him out. As their unlikely friendship turns into a tentative relationship, they weather the daily storm of Tommy’s life with a lot of laughs and more than a few arguments.

Tommy isn't used to trusting outsiders, and he's never asked for help in his life. But when a tragedy strikes the O'Shea family and threatens everything he's fought for, he'll have to learn to do both to recover from the brutal hit.

5.0 out of 5 stars 5/5 Highly Recommended 29 July 2014
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
This was a wonderful book. A proper family book, with well drawn characters and two fantastic heroes. Bobby is the rock, Tommy is the support for his entire family. When I first started reading there was a simple feel to the book and I was drawn in so quickly, then it was just layers on layers of awesome. This could have been full of cliche's but every time I thought something was going to happen it didn't. This isn't all about easy endings and then, the epilogue just made me well up.

Awesome.

5.0 out of 5 stars Family drama without the cheese :) 5 Aug. 2014
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
I really loved this book. It is a family drama without any of the usual cheesy smaltzy events and dialogue. The main caregiver Tommy is a young man so very disillusioned by life, the universe and everything and no one would blame him if he went off the rails. However, instead of taking his bitterness and letting it consume him, he rejects self pity and concentrates on bringing up his many siblings the best way he can with little or no help. He rejects help seeing it as another way to be disappointed or manipulated. Although he feels this philosophy keeps him and the children safe, it also keeps him far from love and healthy relationships of his own. Without him realising, he does have those who care and they learn how to assist him. Gene the bar owner who employs him when he can, Kelly who lets him sell leftover weed for extra money and Bobby, the policeman who just might have the key to saving Tommy and by association, the children too. A really enjoyable and satisfying read.

5.0 out of 5 stars awesome! 10 Mar. 2015
By Debbie
Format:Kindle Edition
Tommy is bringing up his seven, yes seven, brothers and sisters, trying to keep them fed, clothed and in school. His parents (and I use the term very loosely here!) come and go as they please, with no care for the kids. Enter Bobby, a police officer who turns up at Tommy's house, just passing by, alot! Tommy doesn't need help, and he won't ask.

I often read other reviews, before reading a book, not always but usually. Most of the reviews I read mentioned what a s*** life Tommy has, and how much angst was in the book.

And yes, Tommy leaps from one diaster to the next, from one problem to another, living life with his siblings for one day to the next. And yes, its difficult reading, trying to imagine that sort of life.

But I Don't Care.

Tommy's life made the book. Tommy's hardship made the book. Tommy's reluctance to ask for help made this book.

Its written in single person POV. Just Tommy has his say. Regular followers of my reviews will know I don't much care for books written this way, but here??

I Dont Care.

I LOVED it here! Yes, I would like to have heard from Bobby, but I'm just a nosey parker. Tommy had enough to say, and say it he darn well did.

I had this on my wish list for a while, and I wish I had bought it sooner, I really do.

I will certainly look forward to reading other books by this author, as they are new to me.

5 stars

4.0 out of 5 stars Powerful tale 5 Nov. 2014

There should be more people in the world like Tommy O'Shea, he's a grafter and a carer and even tho the world spits in his face he wipes it off and gets on with his crappy life. At such a young age caring for his seven siblings whilst his smacked up parents could care less he finds something in one of the policemen that is often at his house for one reason or another.
This is heart warming and hopeful and I enjoyed it. More a lesson in how well off most of us are without realising - until you read a story like this. Its made me want to read more by this author.

5.0 out of 5 stars True meaning of keeping family together 1 Aug. 2014
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
Tommy is someone I fell for straight away, he was try I B-) to keep his seven brothers and sisters fed, housed and warm. With an alcoholic father and drug addict step mother it was all up to him. In walks local copper Bobby. Watching their relationship unfold was heart warming.

Don't want to say anymore about t he story but it's worth reading. It is so worth the five stars. Highly recommend it.
