Co-written with Boo Hewerdine Chris's latest record easily sits with the best work of Squeeze. Funny & evocative songs some personal some not so personal see Chris at the top of his game. Just like Ray Davies & Glenn Tilbrook Chris is a National Treasure, one of the records of the year and some of the best songs of Chris's career.

Although I like mostly everything Squeeze did - I wouldn't call myself the biggest fan and I don't own all of their records. But the beauty of this album is that you don't need to! I bought it off the strength of hearing the opening track - 'Come on Down' on a free CD given away with the Independent and was glad I took the risk. First and foremost it is an album which is a masterpiece of arrangements, a beautiful honey-soaked blend of Diffords low matter-of-fact vocals mixes perfectly with those of the vastly underated Boo Hewerdine and the star in waiting Dorie Jackson.

Look beyond the arrangements though and there is a rich, dense and wry lyrical sense, tied up with a healthy dose of humour.

Particular highlights are the poignant 'Battersea Boys', 'Never Coming Back' and the masterpiece of the album - 'Fat as a Fiddle', a song that anyone over the age of 30 can probably atest to (yearning for those thin days gone by!)

Sheer brilliance 3 May 2008
Format:Audio CD
Take one bloke (National Treasure is a fair description) and add a heavy dollop of Boo Hewerdine and you have a winning formula. I cant remember an album I have repeat played so many times as this one. Things like 'Mothers Handbag', a song all about the smell of his mothers handbag, Batersea Boys, about a tough man who used to like opera and then the parties over, a song I would love to have played at my funeral (hopefully not too soon!)
I urge you, if you like Eddie Reader, or if you like Kris Drever, or Boo Hewerdine, or Squeeze or talented singer songwriters, get this album.
It would be a tragedy if this album wasn't recognised for the brilliance it is.
