Book Description

26 Jun 2008

The long, hot summers spent on Fire Island have always been the highlight of the year for sisters Riley and Alice. Not least because it is there that they always see Paul: their next-door neighbour, Riley's best friend in all the world, and the only boy Alice has ever loved. Then Paul goes to university, and he leaves them both behind him.

Three years later, as Alice prepares to start Law School, Paul returns. The trick, he tells himself, is to have what he had without destroying it. But their world will change irresistibly, wonderfully and tragically, with every breath they take.

Product Description

'Assured and intelligent, with delicately handled heartache, this is a beautifully written book that will linger long after it's finished. Brashares fans will enjoy its considerable charms. In particular, she is adept at conveying the nuances of being grown up without knowing what that really means.' (News of the World)

'Ann Brashares's new book, THE LAST SUMMER (OF YOU & ME) will delight all of her Traveling Pants fans - now grown-up and ready for this very adult novel of love, loss and the beauty of intense family bonds.' (Anita Shreve)

'Ann Brashares has written a glorious novel of unrequited love, longing and the meaning of friendship in THE LAST SUMMER (OF YOU & ME). She weaves a tale full of delicious plot twists and revelations that will surprise and enthrall you. Riley and Alice are sisters, their relationship is as potent and complex as the real thing. 'A compelling premise . . . steeped in the familiar longings for lost time that readers seeking the carefree pleasures of a summer will enjoy' (Kim Edwards, Washington Post)

'An unputdownable beach book calls for love, deceit, and sex. And THE LAST SUMMER (OF YOU AND ME) has all those elements. The page-turner follows two 20 something sisters as they cross the threshold into adulthood and try to make summer romance last all year.' (Cosmopolitan)

An unputdownable beach book . . . love, deceit, and sex. (Cosmopolitan)

'The page-turning pace of Ann Brashares's THE LAST SUMMER (OF YOU & ME) makes it a perfect beach read.' (Redbook)

'Brashares' writing is natural, insightful, and affecting' (Entertainment Weekly)

'Make no mistake, THE LAST SUMMER (OF YOU & ME) is a weeper: if you don't grow misty there's something a bit shifty about the state of your heart. The novel is a vivid elegy for youth, and Brashares is wise as well as sentimental. She sagely remembers just how it feels to be young, lost and in love. (Miami Herald)

'Her storytelling talent wins out' (New York Post)

4.0 out of 5 stars a solid read.... 6 Jun 2009
Good read. I liked it, it's a good, strong read. Entertaining, good story, and i think i can recommend it to young teenagers as it's not just a boy meets girl story. there are other aspects to it.

5.0 out of 5 stars Beautifully crafted novel 9 Mar 2009
I loved The Sisterhood series by Ann Brashares. I am eighteen and truly related with each of the girls. I also appreciate Ann Brashares' interesting writing style. She has a way of utilising adjectives and verbs, and metaphors too, in unusual ways that both surprise and delight. I was thus very much looking forward to reading this book.
It did not disappoint. Brashares displays a more mature voice here than in the Sisterhood novels, and more mature subject matter perhaps. The plot was at times weak and predictable but by no means boring. However the sheer beauty of the prose more than made up for this. This is why I award the novel five stars. It is flawed, but this does not detract from the wonderful writing. It is truly a book to savour. I related so much with the protagonist, Alice...Brashares has a talent for documenting pieces of the human condition and experience so accurately and with such sincerity. A read I very much recommend.

5.0 out of 5 stars Perfect Holiday read 25 Feb 2012
By WordWiz
I took this book on holiday to Greece and spent all of my time on the beach reading this novel. It's a really romantic story without being cliche or mushy and predictable.
I finished the book in two days it was that good. The characters are relatable and the book kept me guessing!
If you need a good holiday novel or a good romance, this is a must have!
