Product Description

Amazon.co.uk

Although this haunting double CD was not intended to be the last ever made by the conductor Günter Wand who died on Valentine's Day 2002 aged 90, it has taken the opportunity to sell itself as such. It includes live recordings of Bruckner's Symphony No.4 "Romantic" in its original version and Schubert's Fifth made on tour in 2001. The romanticism in the Bruckner is the hunting horn call of the woods whence Europeans feel they came, a distant echo of their origins. The horns of Wand's own NDR-Sinfonieorchester dominate each movement, blowing with a hollow, soul-gripping sense of regret for lost innocence. Wand shapes the movements as if they were chapters in the life story of the world, caressing the tempi with a narrator's omniscience, infusing the whole with a feeling of history completed.

Schubert's Fifth aspires to Classicism, submitting itself to compositional rules to create formal beauty. Wand extracts a performance of youthful excitement at the musical symmetry, fashioning in the elegant slow movement a polished and perfect jewel. The CD concludes with a recording of Wand's last interview (translated into English in the booklet). The wise elder decries media manipulation giving as an example of the public's resistance to it the Royal Albert Hall Prom he gave in 2001. "Seven thousand people came," he croaks, "and you could hear a pin drop." It felt like a special night at the time; it is gratifying to know the great man thought so too. A treasured disc already. --Rick Jones

5.0 out of 5 stars The world is missing a great conductor 29 April 2003

Well - Günter Wand simply is missing in the musical world of today, and he surely cannot be replaced. Having lived in Hamburg (or close by) in the last years I had the great pleassure to listen to almost all concerts of this master live (i.e. sitting in the concert hall), including the one recorded here. For the "big B's" - Beethoven, Brahms, Bruckner - you cannot find better recordings than Wand's. The NDR SO with Wand grows probably to one of the world's best orchestras. The performances were allways fascinating masterpieces. Wand is the master of the big picture, the context within the whole piece and the movements themselfs - and the orchestra followed him, sometimes even only on a little movement with his forefinger...
Listening to his recordings - and particularly to this one - I still feel the loss to myself personally due to the death of this big old man, which speeks for the recording itself. Technically the recording is excellent, since it is usually the same bunch of NDR techincians who recorded the Wand performances.
Taken together you cannot go better than with this recording (this is true for all of his recordings by the way...).
